Description of Job

Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) is a cash funded, self supporting division of the Colorado Department of Corrections. CCi provides training and education for offenders in 60+ types of industries to include greenhouse operations, fishery operations, office furniture manufacturing, metal fabrications, printing and much more. CCi provides services to many government and non profit organizations with an emphasis on excellent customer service.

This is a Furniture Shop Supervisor position with the Colorado Correctional Industries, Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). Position ensures the safety and security of the general public, staff, and offenders while supervising and directing offender work crews in the CCi Seating Factory. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides supervision, instruction, oversight, mentorship, and training of offenders; provides expertise in practices, products and procedures;

  • Provides quality furniture products;

  • Supervises and trains in the manufacturing and distribution of furniture, fabric application, custom wood products, blue-print reading, and techniques and proper application of furniture/wood finishes;

  • Oversight of operations, schedules and changes; direct daily activities, promote positive performance, ensures compliance with health and safety standards.

  • Contributes to profitability; meets established quality standards;

  • Maintains adequate inventory and tracking systems; monitors profit/loss potential; calculates material and labor costs on standard/custom products; initiates purchase requisitions; reviews and confirms specifications of raw materials, hardware, and supplies used in the manufacturing process;

  • Initiates manufacturing process by reviewing, assigning and distributing orders to proper work areas;

  • Motivates, reviews and evaluates offender performance;

  • Completes ACA, payroll, and activity reports by gathering information and inputting information into electronic systems;

  • Ensures the safety and security of the public, facility staff and offenders by evaluating work conditions; instructs staff and offenders in proper safety methods;

  • Provides custody, surveillance, supervision, transport, shakedown and count duties; ensures proper key, tool, equipment and chemical control; ensure compliance of all policy/procedural guidelines; enforces safety/security procedures by conducting inspections, work site searches and monitoring the work environment.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

Four (4) years of employment experience in the production of wood items, cabinet making, carpentry, furniture manufacturing, or furniture refurbishing. Experience must be described in detail on your application to receive credit.

Substitutions:

Completion of formal education at an accredited, non-correspondence trade/vocational school, college or university that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those gained through the required experience may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. If you are using education as a substitution, you must attach transcripts showing the degree and date awarded.

Required Competencies:

  • Proficiency in furniture manufacturing or refurbishing;

  • Knowledge of and ability to work with various furniture and finishing products;

  • Ability to design, fabricate, and repair furniture products based on verbal or written descriptions, sketches, drawings or blueprints;

  • Ability to research and plan a final furniture product from conception to implementation, while considering safety and security, utilizing resources efficiently;

  • Ability to motivate others to work cohesively in accomplishing tasks;

  • Ability to maintain industrial furniture production equipment;

  • Ability to effectively work with offenders through daily instruction in a variety of situations;

  • Ability to respond to emergency situations (such as fights, fires and escapes);

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Exceptional discernment and decision making skills.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience in training and supervising individuals in a furniture manufacturing environment;

  • Experience working in a correctional environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successfully complete the Department of Corrections Basic Training upon hire;

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete PPCT (Pressure Point Control Tactics);

  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

  • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

  • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

  • Swing a baton in a striking technique;

  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

  • Positions that have direct contact with offenders may be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security

  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;

  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;

  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to travel;

  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;

  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
