Learn more about this agency Responsibilities As a Criminal Investigator (Special Agent), you will serve as part of the NPS Visitor and Resource Protection Directorate. Special Agents provide critical investigative and other law enforcement support to park and regional law enforcement programs to provide immediate and long-term protection of park resources, visitors, assets, employees and residents. This is accomplished through detection, investigation, apprehension, and successful prosecution of persons who violate the laws of the United States of America while within, or while affecting, the National Park System. Investigations involve the full range of law enforcement activities, such as conducting cover operations and surveillance, interrogating suspects, seizure of contraband, securing and serving warrants, transporting prisoners, and collecting and preserving evidence. Specific duties include: * Working in cooperation with other federal and state agencies, the parks and other National Park Service entities in enforcing laws; * Coordinating, cooperating and enlisting the assistance and support of federal, state and local law enforcement officers and coordinate investigative efforts with them; * Determining and directing the most effective manner for developing and executing an investigation; * Preparing investigative reports presenting necessary aspects of the investigation in sufficient detail with proper emphasis and highest degree of accuracy in support of prosecution; * Analyzing intelligence and using link analysis to determine relationships of individuals and organization of criminal enterprises; * In coordination with regional office and park staffs, consulting with U.S. Attorneys during development of investigations and all aspects of preparation for trial; and * Testifying in federal and state criminal or civil proceedings. You must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance. * May be subject to a one-year probationary period. * All requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. * Status candidates must meet-time-in-grade requirements. * You must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license. * You must sign a Mobility Agreement acknowledging that the duty location is determined by the needs of the NPS; therefore, you may be reassigned to different geographic locations throughout your tenure. * You must be able to to secure and maintain a NPS Law Enforcement Commission. * You are required to carry a firearm and must maintain firearm proficiency as part of the job. You must not have not been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence. * This position has a maximum entry age of 37. Applicants who will reach their 37th birthday by time of appointment cannot be considered unless they meet one of the exemptions. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. * This position is subject to pre-employement and random drug testing. * You will be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report initially and annually thereafter. Qualifications In order to be qualified for this position at the GS-11 level, you must possess one of the following: A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL/GS-9 level in the federal service investigating, apprehending, arresting and detaining individuals related to alleged violations of federal or state laws; testifying in federal or state court; securing search and arrest warrants through process of affidavit; collecting evidence in compliance with applicable laws and procedures; and developing intelligence data on individuals and organizations known or suspected of criminal activity. - OR - B. A Ph.D., LLM or doctoral degree in a field related to law, law enforcement, or criminal justice, I have or successfully completed three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in one of the aforementioned fields. - OR - C. A combination of specialized experience, as described in A, and graduate level education, as described in B, that when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement. Please note: Only graduate education in excess of the first two years may be used in this calculation. In order to be qualified for this position at the GS-12 level, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL/GS-11 grade level in the federal service planning and conducting complex criminal investigations (e.g. those with overlapping jurisdictional issues, multiple involved parties, or limited physical evidence); testifying in federal or state court; conducting surveillance operations to gather intelligence/evidence; interviewing and interrogating arrested suspects; and collaborating with other law enforcement bodies and attorneys to coordinate investigations, share best practices, or prepare cases for trial. Prior experience in a primary law enforcement position is highly desired. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated.
