The primary purpose of the position is to manage and supervise a comprehensive interpretive and visitor services operation within Shenandoah National Park's North District, including Dickey Ridge Visitor Center. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities * Manages a comprehensive interpretive and visitor services operation within the North District including the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center, formal interpretive and education programming, informal visitor contacts, and community outreach programs. Evaluates and recommends changes or corrective actions based on observation and evaluation of all program areas. * Directly supervises a pool of temporary staff, student interns, volunteers, and cooperating association staff working in the Dickey Ridge visitor center, multiple field locations and facilities, and off-site locations. * Assists in the recruitment and selection for vacant positions; manages the workforce, provides training, establishes performance standards, evaluates performance, and addresses conduct issues. Ensures compliance with Merit Systems Principles and Equal Opportunity laws and policies. * Ensures compliance with safety initiatives and programs, including operational leadership and wellness programs. * Serves as an active member of the Interpretation and Education Division Leadership Team. Promotes and demonstrates teamwork and cooperation with other work groups and park partners. Regularly facilitates communications between interpretation staff and park management and park partners to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships resulting in effective teamwork. * Assists with planning, organization and implementation of formal training, on-the-job-training, coaching incorporating the use of current and emerging interpretive and educational concepts, techniques, technology, knowledge of audiences, and current scholarship for interpretive program effectiveness. * Manages the allocation and expenditure of district funds in multiple accounts including agency base funds, fee monies, donations, and cooperating association/partner accounts. Manages fee-based interpretation programs/services within guidelines. Identifies and secures project/grant funding in accordance with planned activities. Ensures established operational funding is appropriately allocated and expended. * Conveys complex information on natural or cultural resources in easily understood formats to meet the needs of diverse audiences (different ages, levels of knowledge or understanding of the subject, or interest levels). * Contributes interpretive writing for publications, exhibits, webpages and social media posts, videos, and other interpretive media projects. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. * You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You may also be required to submit all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. * You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. * You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. * If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. * You may be required to travel overnight away from home; You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. * This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for this position is April through November, but can be variable due to project requirements or weather conditions. * Government housing is not available. Qualifications To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: coordinating, managing or directing interpretive programs; assist/develop long range program plans; developing educational programs; managing interpretive staff or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. * OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education OR master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation. Directly-related course of study may include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts. * OR- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the total number of completed graduate level semester hours beyond the first year and divide by 18. Then take the number of months of specialized experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Education To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
