Every year Community College of Vermont employs nearly 800 part-time faculty to teach its courses at 12 locations statewide and online, and we are always looking for enthusiastic, knowledgeable teachers. All faculty work part-time with a maximum of three courses each semester.

The Community College of Vermont seeks applicants for a part-time faculty position to teach Substance Use Prevention (3 Credits) for the Fall 2024 semester.

Note: Successful completion of the SPF Application for Prevention Success Training (SAPST) Training of Trainers is a prerequisite for teaching this course.

Day/Times: Thursdays from 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Semester Dates: 9/5/24 - 12/12/24

Location: Synchronous (online via Zoom)

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of substance use prevention. The class prepares students to employ industry-recognized strategies to promote well-being among individuals and within families, workplaces, schools, and communities.

This course is based on the nationally recognized SAPST (SPF Application for Prevention Success Training) developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies. This course is designed to fulfill a portion of the education requirements needed in Vermont for the Certified Prevention Specialist credential.

Course Objectives:

1.Identify commonly misused substances and health concerns related to their use.

2.Describe developmental, psychological, sociological, physiological, and cultural attributes that function as risk and protective factors in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders.

3.Identify physical symptoms and behavioral signs of substance use disorders.

4.Discuss methods for assessing community readiness and resources for addressing substance use disorders, as well as strategies to increase a community's capacity to prevent problems identified in an assessment.

5.Apply industry-recognized prevention frameworks and strategies to promote well-being among individuals and within families, workplaces, schools, and communities.

6.Explain how health disparities relate to prevention.

7.Discuss the importance of cultural competence in prevention work and identify skills and strategies for supporting and collaborating with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

8.Identify different types of interventions and describe the criteria for selecting an intervention.

9.Explain the importance of evaluating prevention programs and interventions, methods for assessing their efficacy, and what to consider when reporting outcomes.



  1. Explore the scope and diversity of career opportunities in the field of substance use disorder prevention through assignments such as informational interviews, job shadows, or other career exploration activities.

Requirements: Master's degree and successful completion of the SPF Application for Prevention Success Training (SAPST) Training of Trainers is required.
