The Opportunity

The Merchandise NPI & Category Manager will be the operational lead on new product introductions and company promotions across all merchandise categories. The role will focus on Promotional activities initiated by R+F Brand Marketing and Field Development, including Gift with Purchase merchandise (GWPs) and Cosmetic Tools to support new product launches. Responsibilities will include partnering with internal teams and strategic suppliers to bring to innovative products to market that meet our cost and quality targets in addition to supplier relationship management. The Manager will oversee products through the design and approval process from creative concept to the delivery of finished product at the Distribution Center.

The role will serve as the primary operational liaison to Creative and Brand Management to ensure successful launch of product promotions in support of our Commercial Calendar. In addition, the Manager will be critical to applying NPI best practices and laying a broader merchandise supplier strategy as R+F scales for global growth

The qualified candidate must be a fast learner and self-starter, be able to work well both independently and as a part of a team, manage multiple projects at once, and have fun while working. To be successful in this role, you must be proactive and be passionate about the value that New Product Introductions and Supply Chain brings to the company.

The position is based in San Francisco.

REPORTS TO: Sr. Manager of New Product Introductions


  • Lead all aspects of supplier relationship management for designated set of products and suppliers. Implement category strategies to optimize business efficiency. Communicate performance and develop improvement plans for suppliers via formal business reviews.

  • Develop merchandise category management strategies including strategic sourcing, supplier relationship management, contract, performance and risk management. Work with cross functional partners in understanding the Total Cost of Ownership and identifying opportunities to increase quality and improve value for money.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams and suppliers to build out detailed project plans. Manage plans to ensure deliverables are met and promotions and new product launches are managed with no risk to supply, on time, and in accordance with contractual obligations. Ensures issues are managed to closure.

  • Support Create, Brand and Packaging Development and proactively partner with suppliers to bring innovation and style trends to internal cross-functional conversations. Represent supplier capabilities as needed. Conduct workshops to bring supplier innovation and concepts to internal R+F stakeholders.

  • Support Sr. Manager in building out a best-in-class sourcing and go-to-market approach including standard checklists, timelines, and change management materials that allows for successful product launches, mitigating supply and quality risk.

  • Understand and articulate all of the steps required to successfully launch promotional merchandise items, GWPs and Cosmetic Tools including tooling, pilots, validations, testing and scale up protocol. Partner with internal Regulatory and Quality teams to establish standards to support global distribution of products.

  • Build effective strategic relationships with cross-functional teams and leaders. Partner with peers to validate approach. Build foundational processes that allow for global design, manufacturing, and distribution of merchandise. Remove roadblocks as needed.

  • Participate as an active core team member in all relevant Strategic Sourcing efforts by validating potential supplier capabilities and capacity and ensuring manufacturing practices meet R+F standards.

  • Perform all pre-qualification activities to validate supplier capabilities. Proactively seek new supplier capabilities to support the product development roadmap. Lead new supplier onboarding activities for relevant suppliers.

  • Lead supplier performance conversations by summarizing internal cross-functional feedback in addition to supplier KPIs. Evaluate preferred supplier portfolio across future business requirements.

  • Continuously communicate project status and risks, as well as influence change and improvements to all cross functional departments and all levels of the organization as needed. Actively escalate timeline and business risks to senior leaders.

  • Support global expansion team on all product launches specifically for new markets. Manage the operational timelines and liaise with operational team members to ensure deliverables are met on time.


  • Demonstrated success in supporting product development activities using a best-practice approaches; experience with process building and change management.

  • Effective at developing relationships with cross-functional team members at all levels. Work through complex problems that impact multiple teams. Successfully drive to an optimal solve with stakeholder buy-in.

  • Experience managing supplier relationships and building category strategies to support business needs.

  • Ability to leverage information to create value in day-to-day transactions, in addition to leading more complex supplier negotiations that deliver hard and soft dollar savings to the company.

  • Candidate ideally has broad knowledge of merchandise categories and an understanding of working with suppliers who are based in global locations.

  • Candidate should demonstrate flexibility and ability to work comfortably within ambiguity with an ability to build processes and tools to build a foundation to support global requirements.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced, rapid growth, evolving environment. Self-motivator and able to drive results quickly.

  • Ability to travel anticipated to supplier, manufacturing and distribution partners, approximately 10%.

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably with a focus on supply chain management or product development.

  • 7+ years of supply chain or new product development experience; experience in merchandise, beauty or personal care is a plus.

  • Experience with New Product Introductions / Development, Lean and/or Six Sigma principles and project management a plus

  • Proficient knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point, SAP/ERP system and/or eRFX knowledge a plus

Responsibilities: Category Related: * Serve as category expert for the Managed Hosting / IaaS /PaaS categories 
 * Understand the key trends, differences and critically understand the importance 
of trends in Public cloud offerings 
 * Understand the product portfolio and services offered by the providers and stay 
up to date with new service announcements 
 * Manage category spend analytics, master use of 3r d party tool used to 
consolidate and analyze public cloud spend 
 * Provide primary Sourcing support for internal business partners for sourcing requests including; contract negotiations, performing market analysis, provide spend data insights and recommendations, and develop business case for new projects. Exceed agreed upon SLAs and provide detailed reporting on KPIs. 
 * Understand and convert the tactical and strategic business objectives of Strategic Sourcing into actionable tasks/projects, delivering results that enable the business to achieve their objectives. 
 * Provide category report detailing spend and usage trends, supplier performance metrics, savings, and improvement opportunities, etc. 
 * Collect information and analyze supplier marketplace data including industry structure and demographics, supplier performance, cost dynamics, etc. 
 * Develop quantitative models and tools to support sourcing activities 
 * Manage monthly invoicing process and liaison between AP, the business and the 
supplier to ensure invoices are paid and accounts are in good standing 
 * Conduct and manage RFx processes, including on-line tools

 * 3+ years of direct experience in sourcing/procurement of Public Cloud/IaaS/PaaS/Managed Hosting sourcing 
 * Experience within or working with top-tier companies in the respective categories and an understanding of their offerings, differentiator and pricing (Azure, AWS, SoftLayer, Google, etc.) 
 * Deep understanding of cost levers across providers (RIs, Spot Instances etc.) 
 * Bachelor's degree from reputable 4-year university or equivalent work experience. (MBA preferred) 
 * Deep knowledge of the sourcing process and competitive bidding process: interfacing with clients, analyzing responses, developing selection criteria, and choosing appropriate suppliers (RFP, RFI, RFQ). 
 * Contracts and Agreements: Ability to read, write, and interpret contractual documentation. Knowledge of contract terms, applications, and legal requirements. 
 * Ability to manage performance to contracts and agreements. 
 * Ability to explain requirements contained in agreements. Knowledge of the types 
of agreements and the appropriate usage under various customer 
 * Ability to explain, at a high level, the legal implications of a contract agreement. 
Ability to draft contract language that operationalizes business relationships with suppliers in order to protect interests and withstand legal challenges. 
 * Data and Analytics: Ability to use data and apply robust analytics to model various business scenarios and analyze resulting cost, impact, risks, and benefits to inform and recommend business solutions.
