Category Analyst

Job Description Summary

The Category Analyst position will be focusing on one or two main category strategies within the AAM Procurement team. The associate will be the subject matter expert on that category in regards to market trends, supply base, cost knowledge and drivers, manufacturing process, upcoming programs, current annual usage and spend, product design factors, functional requirements. Based on this knowledge the associate will develop and maintain a category strategy in coordination with Product Engineering and Supplier Quality.

The associate will also serve as the lead advanced contact from Procurement on new business prior to award. The Category Analyst will need to interact with the supply base on a daily /weekly basis to manage advanced RFQs and evaluate sourcing alternatives. During periods of peak work load the Category Analyst may be asked to assist the Category Buyer on day to day activities related to PO management and source packages.

Potential Categories include bearings, seals, chemical or electronics/mechatronics. Preferred candidate will have experience in the electronics/mechatronics category (ECU's, PCBs, Actuation technology, sensors, traction motors, DC/BLDC motors)

Job Description


  • Performs research in support of these efforts, such as gathering internal and external data comprised of historical spend, budget forecasts, operating plans, economic and market trends, and supplier performance.

  • Responsible for analyzing data to identify trends, creating and interpreting fact-based reports, and supporting the category management team in developing and executing strategies to achieve operational and financial excellence, mitigate risk, and improve supplier performance.

  • Leads the strategic sourcing efforts by participating in the various steps of the process, as directed by the category manager.

  • Also supports the supplier management efforts for the category as directed.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Education

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, Supply Chain Management, Business or Engineering

  • 2-5 years professional experience. Ideally in procurement or related manufacturing experience

  • Strong knowledge of corporate procurement policies and procedures

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others

  • Strong computer skills required including MS Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Good oral and written communication skills require

  • High degree of planning and organization skills required

The person in this position leads defined categories of third-party vendors in spending as well as evaluating existing and potential vendors. The Category Manager is also expected to drive and own cost optimization strategies through innovative sourcing techniques as well as managing price variance and standards for assigned categories. Responsibilities * Serve as a category subject matter expert, creating and conducting the RFI, RFP and RFQ process for assigned categories * Collaborate with the business and the Contracts team to negotiate with vendors and secure the best pricing available for goods and services * Track category performance internally and against industry standards * Identify existing and potential vendors for assigned projects and categories * Conduct market research on vendors, explore vendor options, and understand market cost for category goods and services * Offer alternative sourcing approaches or vendors to business partners to ensure that the best-value vendor is selected * Ensure procurement strategies are known to all relevant parts of the business in order to maximize the commercial advantages and evaluate potential cost savings/avoidance opportunities * Collaborate with the Legal team in the development, review and execution of contracts by utilizing the Quicken Loans governance, risk and compliance tool * Seek out and establish strong working relationships with key team leaders, captains and members who support organizational initiatives * Educate internal business partners on the importance of vendor management and holding suppliers accountable to contractual commitments * Ensure contract renewals are completed on time to avoid lapses in services * Ensure that all purchases are compliant with internal policies Requirements * 2 years of experience with procurement processes and supporting technologies, preferably in creating and facilitating RFIs, RFPs and RFQs and leading price negotiations * Ability to identify, track and communicate risk concerns to vendors, business leaders and stakeholders at all levels * Strong sense of urgency with a track record of delivering quantifiable results * Ability to influence leadership and a diverse group of internal clients * Strong verbal communication and public speaking skills * Bachelor's degree in business administration, supply chain management, finance or a related area industry * Ability to prioritize and plan work activities to achieve goals and objectives * Ability to develop realistic action plans What'll Make You Special * 2 years of experience managing critical vendor relationships (ideally in the mortgage or financial services industry) * Previous experience in the technology industry * Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) certification * Experience with Workday or similar ERP systems Who We Are We're America's largest mortgage lender, closing loans in all 50 states.
