POSITION SUMMARY:
The Progressive Home Underwriting Analytics team is seeking a Catastrophe Modeling Analyst lll (Data Analyst III). This senior level position is responsible for preparing business specific analysis by using mathematical concepts, reinsurance terms, and catastrophe modeling data to identify trends, and prepare recommendations for business solutions. Also responsible for quality and quantity of sound decisions around business processes. The Catastrophe Modeling Analyst can lead projects and work independently with more than one business group and top stakeholders. This senior position can manipulate large data sets, understand database structure, query and extract data, perform analysis and provide recommendations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Meets with management, peers and other departments to discuss analysis needs to ensure thorough understand of analysis requirements.
Works with business partners to analyze needs for information and converts them into action items, requests or projects.
Gathers requirements and develops specifications for business analysis needs.
Retrieves data from various sources and prepares data for analysis.
Develops complex queries against data sources.
Develops and modifies programs, such as SAS and/or SQL, when more complex analysis is required.
Compiles and prepares reports, graphs and charts of data.
Considers alternative end user solutions in which analysis is presented (i.e., developing spreadsheets and tools for management use).
Builds on present analysis to build future analysis.
Summarizes and presents analysis findings and discusses recommendations for next steps.
Explains analysis by discussing analysis approach and summary of findings.
Uses judgment to recommend workable alternatives to stakeholders.
Recommends process improvements and/or goal changes to manager and/or business partners.
Gains agreement on next steps and ensures implementation of recommended actions.
Participates in the formation of business plans and forecasts and provides answers to questions about business data to appropriate business units.
Supports and leads business area projects (large and complex) by applying general knowledge of the business area processes including best practices.
Works on projects beyond the scope of their own business area.
Mentors lower level staff work assignments and training needed.
Owns projects and could distribute project components to other staff members.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will have a catastrophe modeling and/or reinsurance background, strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL and Excel, familiarity with automation, geo spatial solutions, data analysis and presentation
Bachelor's degree in a related field of study (e.g., Finance, Mathematics, Accounting, Economics or Statistics) and a minimum of 4 years analytical work experience in a professional setting
In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 7 years property casualty insurance experience with related analytical experience (e.g., analytical work in a professional setting)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Thorough understanding of business processes and systems knowledge.
Knowledge of Big Data concepts, practices and terminology.
Intermediate computer skills including MS Office with advanced skills in Excel with knowledge of spreadsheet functionality including v-look-up, pivot tables, charts, graphing and macros.
Database experience including the ability to create PowerPoint graphs, tables and information reports in slide format.
Highly proficient in programming skills, i.e., SAS, R and SQL.
Strong collaboration and relationship building skills.
Ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations.
Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
Negotiation skills and ability to influence others by educating and sharing information.
Presentation skills and ability to present information in various ways to meet audience needs.

Reviews and discusses work product findings with other analysts and manager. Assists in developing proposals for action plans as a result of findings by becoming proficient with the fundamental concepts of analysis and data mining methodologies.
