Position Summary: The Cat Caregiver Tier 2 will work within a team setting to oversee the health, well being, and general care of the cats at Best Friends Los Angeles.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities Include:
Provide care and handling for cats that may have behavioral issues which may include shyness, fearfulness, and other undesirable behaviors.
Provide care for cats that have significant medical issues including, but not limited to, panleukopenia, ringworm, calici, renal failure, feline leukemia virus (FeLV), etc.
Feeding the cats in the center according to the established protocol including: bottle feeding and tube feeding neonates; and force feeding or esophagogastric tube feeding medical cases as required.
Monitor cat eating habits, make food adjustments as necessary, and report to supervisors when there are changes in appetite or weight fluctuations, including weighing and recording on charts for neonates and medical cases.
Work with Lead/Manager to determine proper treatment/plan of action of sick or behavioral neonates or cats and assign appropriate trackers and signage.
Maintain accurate, organized, up-to-date records for all the cats in Best Friends Los Angeles care.
Clean in accordance with posted protocols to include all cat area's: main cat area, neonate nursery, ringworm wards, panleukopenia wards, and other miscellaneous medical wards.
Administer medications to all cats in the center including neonates, general population, and severe medical cases; medications include but are not limited to, oral, topical, subcutaneous, and medicated baths.
Check medications against "med sheets" for accuracy, document error(s), and work with medical team to obtain correct medications as applicable.
Observe medical/behavioral issues with cats, and discuss with supervisors/Manager.
Ensure all cats have accurate information and quality photos on their kennel cards. Report to supervisor if anything is missing or inaccurate.
Assist with writing "bios" for cats in the adoption program, with focus on assigned project cats.
Work with Adoption Team to promote cats to potential adopters; with focus on assigned project cats.
Enhance the physical and emotional well-being of the cats including, but not limited to, in-kennel enrichment, enhancing rooms for appropriate stimulation, and project cat time.
Work closely with and supervise volunteers while promoting positive morale, creativity, and teamwork amongst them.
Working with Adoptions Staff and Management, help to determine better and more effective means to promote and adopt our cats.
Assist Nursery Lead and Cat Care Lead with communicating intake space, and serving as point of contact upon arrival of admissions team.
Perform intake exams on neonate kittens including vaccinations and other medications as designated by age.
Work with Nursery Lead, Cat Care Lead, and medical team to ensure that the spay/neuter list remains up to date.
In conjunction with Nursery Lead, Cat Care Lead, Cat Behavior and Enrichment Lead, and medical team ensure that medical/behavioral cases including, but not limited to, ringworm cases, panleukopenia cases, and those with medical/behavioral trackers are moving through the program in the most efficient manner.
In conjunction with Nursery Lead, act as point of contact for volunteers who are scheduled for nursery shadow sessions.
In conjunction with Cat Care Lead and Cat Behavior and Enrichment Lead, act as point of contact for volunteers who are scheduled for Welcome Shifts or First Day Trainings.
Work with Cat Care Lead, Cat Behavior and Enrichment Lead, and NKLA team to identify cat candidates to be taken to NKLA.
Work with Cat Care Lead, Cat Behavior and Enrichment Lead, and mobile adoptions team to identify cat candidates to be taken to mobile adoption events.
Cultivating good team building practices through good communication, sharing information, and working together to achieve goals.
Mentoring Tier 1 caregivers on enhancing the volunteer experience. Demonstrating the ability to fully utilize volunteers to get daily goals accomplished. Coach Tier 1 caregivers on how to work with and educate individual volunteers, as well as groups of volunteers.
Taking the lead on working closely with Nursery Lead, Cat Care Lead, and Behavior and Enrichment Lead to ensure daily duties are accomplished in a timely and efficient manner.
Other duties as assigned by Management.
Required skills and experience:
Demonstrate competency as Master of Tier 1 Caregiver or equivalent experience.
Work with a positive outlook, upbeat, energetic, and taking initiative.
Demonstrates ability to create and encourage a positive work environment.
Strong desire to work with cats as well as previous experience working with cats is preferred.
Must be able to work with all cats, including those with health or behavioral concerns/conditions.
Experience with bottle babies and an understanding of basic medical needs for neonate animals a plus.
Demonstrated leadership skills, ability to coach peers and volunteers.
Resourceful. Must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically persist until goals are achieved.
Able to act decisively in emergency situations - making medical decisions for neonatal kittens and animals with special needs.
Must be able to handle stressful situations and make difficult decision under pressure.
Experience interacting with the general public preferred. Demonstrating approachability when dealing with the general public.
Strong interpersonal skills, i.e., ability to develop positive relationships with others and demonstrate sensitivity to the thoughts, feelings, and perspectives of others.
Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening skills.
Basic computer skills required including checking and preparing emails, managing google calendar and google document, and using the Automatic Data Processing (ADP) system for time keeping and access to documents.
Must be able to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus.
Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business.
Must be able to routinely lift 40-50 pounds.
Must be physically able to perform strenuous manual labor.
Effectively handle dogs and cats.
Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity.
Lifting and handling animals of varying sizes and breeds, bending, stooping and walking on a daily basis.
Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night, holiday and on-call work.
