ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is hiring Student Nurses to support the Resource Pool as Casual Patient Care Technicians at our McCandless location.

What is a Patient Care Technician?

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are essential partners in that mission, enhancing the patient experience at UPMC with positivity and integrity. Nursing support staff give personal care to patients with an emphasis on dignity and respect, striving to make each patient feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. Patient Care Technicians also provide invaluable aid to nurses and doctors on the floor by completing important skilled tasks such as checking vital signs and glucose levels, performing EKGs and blood draws, and much more.

Shifts/Hours: As a Casual Patient Care Technician in the Resource Pool, you will be required to work a minimum of 8 hours/week.

Applicants are required to have at least one round of clinical rotations completed for consideration.

About the Unit: The Resource Pool provides support to the nursing units to ensure adequate staffing. The department is made up of full, time, part time, and casual nurses, nursing assistants, patient care technicians, and care attendants.

The staff are designated to either support the Medical, Surgical, Progressive Care, and Inpatient Rehab areas related to experience as we try to supplement unit-based staff related to census surge, vacant positions, and other daily needs.

Purpose:

Provides routine patient care and supports the department services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the nurse or physician to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times. Must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND at least 4 of the following hospital identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.

  • Assists with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies.

  • Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.

  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.

  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.

  • Establishes appropriate and effective communication with other departments.

  • Establishes professional and respectful interpersonal relationships.

  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.

  • Constructively receives feedback and direction. Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director.

  • Takes action to improve knowledge, skills and performance.

  • Requests assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed.

  • Participates in self-review as requested by the unit director.

  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.

  • May apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.

  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team.

  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence and impairment in the health professions.

  • Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace.

  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.

  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information.

  • Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.

  • Suggests and supports changes within the department.

  • Assumes responsibility for assignment and views problems as challenges.

  • Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department.

  • Supports department-based projects and quality initiatives.

  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.

  • Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner.

  • Completes department clerical functions as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must be enrolled in RN program.

  • 1 round of Clinical Rotations completed.

  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program.

  • Successful completion of basic information system training.

  • Microcomputer experience preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is hiring full-time Patient Care Technicians to support various inpatient units at our McCandless location. Hours vary by unit, but full-time candidates can expect to work between 36 to 40 hours per week. These positions will also require working a rotating schedule that include weekends and holidays. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs): are vital partners in the patient care provided at UPMC. They work on patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay. The work of a PCT is both challenging and very rewarding but, many find this to be a wonderful life long career. All hired candidates will be required to attend a 7-day mandatory training course. This course is held during weekdays and daylight hours. All 7 days are mandatory and are scheduled in a structured classroom setting. Responsibilities: * Assisting patients with activities of daily living including assisting with bathing, dressing and other hygiene needs. * The PCT provides routine patient care and support services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and may be directed by the nurse or physician, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is always maintained. * Interacting and attending to patients and their families on a regular basis, to ensure patient satisfaction. * Working hand in and hand with the nursing staff to report any changes in the patient's well-being or changes in their conditions. * Working directly with patients to re-position and assist them in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed). * Performing basic clinical skills such as weighing patients, taking blood pressures/pulses/respirations, collecting and measuring specime. * Helping patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches. * Transporting patients, by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts, to and from tests and other units. * Depending upon the role, a PCT may also perform several advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins. Qualifications * High school diploma or equivalent. * Prior direct patient care experience preferred. * Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques. * Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. * Certified Nursing Assistant(CNA) preferred. * Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred. * Previous Patient Care Technician experience preferred. * Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse. * If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program or Nursing Student that has completed one Clinical Rotation.
