Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or Instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to one calendar year for part-time employees.

Description of Duties:

  • Provides support to faculty in the studio arts including ceramics, drawing, painting, digital photography, digital art, printmaking, and screenprinting.

  • Assists in preparation for Art classes including but not limited to the ordering, receiving, storing, and maintenance of supplies and equipment for art classes.

  • Prepares and maintains materials for studio art classes.

  • Maintains a computer inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment and available supplies and prepares stock.

  • Maintains five studio lab spaces including cleaning sinks, tabletops, and floors.

  • Trains, Assigns, and supervises paid and volunteer student workers.

  • Supports and assists studio art faculty in promoting outreach activities, displaying artwork around campus, and communicating with campus Communications Specialist in marketing and public relations activities.

  • Monitors safety conditions in Art labs. Stores supplies and chemicals in accordance with established OSHA regulations and policies. Trains student employees in the proper and safe use of art supplies.

  • Maintains all equipment in proper and safe working condition. Contacts repair technicians for service of equipment when warranted. Stocks first aid kits.

  • Maintains flexible working hours including nights and weekends.

  • Other Duties as Assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Fine Art or related field and 0 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for maintaining art studio lab space and art gallery exhibition space; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of studio art and art gallery exhibitions demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.

  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with the creation of studio art work.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of operation of ceramic kilns, screen printing and printmaking equipment, printers, paints and other materials used in the making of art.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of studio arts and art gallery exhibitions.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and utilize word processing and spreadsheet software.

  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs.

  • Experience with or knowledge of OSHA and hazardous waste guidelines.

  • Able to work nights and weekends as required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Fine Arts.

  • Experience working in an art gallery space including art installations and take downs, photographing art work and promoting exhibitions.
