The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Specialist I for the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP). VKRP is a partnership between the University of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Education, and school divisions across the Commonwealth. VKRP partners with the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) to provide a comprehensive picture of each student's skills at kindergarten entry and beyond.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $35,360 - $43,680 annually ($17 - $21 per hour).

RESPONSIBILITIES

The ideal candidate will assist the project with both public-facing technology support and research/implementation coordination. The incumbent is responsible for providing support to customers, including teachers, principals, and administrators of the VKRP and PALS systems, through the VKRP and PALS hotlines and online chat support program.

An understanding of customer support and creating efficient trouble-shooting processes and procedures is ideal. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting in testing added features and the management of online users and assessments on the VKRP web application system.

The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the purchase and distribution of assessment materials to support teachers and other users of the VKRP. Duties also include helping to maintain project timelines and deliverables and implementing project changes designed by senior researchers as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Education, Psychology, Educational Technology, or a related field is required. Experience working in education or educational research is required.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to interact effectively with a diverse team of internal and external constituencies.

  • Knowledge and skill in using Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word), and content management systems is essential and required.

Preferred:

  • Any experience as a technology support specialist or customer support in an educational organization is a plus. Time working as a student may be considered.

VKRP is a state-wide initiative that builds a more comprehensive understanding of school readiness and success. Responsibilities: Responsibilities related to project coordination include ensuring that major milestones are achieved under the direct supervision of the Co-Investigator. The incumbent provides direct assistance to the Co-Investigator (Co-I) in efforts to lead and manage the VKRP work. The Project Associate works with the Co-I to coordinate VKRP sub-teams, draft budgets and monitor expenses across multiple budgets and make adjustments accordingly, and update key stakeholders on project status. Independently, the Project Associate creates systems to plan, track, and monitor all aspects of project completion including timelines and budgets. Duties also include serving as a liaison with Virginia school divisions, Virginia Department of Education, external stakeholders, and the senior research team. Responsibilities related to VKRP web application and technology support include working with internal technology staff and external partners to coordinate meetings, manage timelines and key project dates, and provide additional support to the VKRP technology staff. Duties include assisting in testing of key web components, developing protocols for technology customer support, and managing content updates to the VKRP web presence. Qualifications: Required: * A Bachelor's degree is required. * At least two years of experience in early childhood education, administrative or budget experience is also required. * Outstanding written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are essential. * Organizational skills and the ability to multitask are required, as is an attention to detail. * Ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as collaborate with a diverse team are required. * Ability to work under pressure in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining professionalism is a must. * Knowledge of and experience with website development, technology platforms, and technology support is also required. * Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel) is required. * Knowledge and familiarity with Box and Canvas and the ability to use Google docs and drives are also required. Preferred: * Master's degree is preferred and may substitute for some experience. * Prior experience with project coordination, including tracking timelines, establishing communication and project protocols is preferred. * Prior experience with web application development, technology support, server needs, and/or online training is also preferred. * Advanced graduate degree or certifications in related project management or technology areas preferred.
