Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver's license.

Experience in counseling, rehabilitation, or casework management. Working knowledge of principles and practices of counseling, of casework and treatment methods, of behavior modification and offender restoration rehabilitation. Experience facilitating rehabilitative programs.

Experience preparing reports. Demonstrated ability to counsel and interact with offenders to develop, implement, and follow through on treatment plans and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Social Services, Counseling, Criminal Justice or other areas related to human services; an equivalent combination of training and experience may substitute for education. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel). Previous experience working in adult counseling or corrections. Spanish speaking applicants are encouraged to apply.

VIEW JOBS 6/21/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-09-19T00:00 The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) Halifax Public Defender Office has an opening for an attorney who is committed to advocating on behalf of indigent clients. The attorney will handle trial and appellate cases. The VIDC is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Assistant Public Defender reports to the Public Defender of the Halifax Office and is employed at will. Duties: Duties include conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions. The attorney will be responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts, as well as identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients and researching, writing, and arguing appeals before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Virginia. Minimum Qualifications Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission is required for consideration for this fulltime, salaried position. (Applicants pending bar results may be considered for a Fellowship opportunity with a monthly stipend. Upon successfully passing the Bar Exam would be eligible to apply for any vacant Assistant Public Defender positions.) Knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence is required along with experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications and skills in keyboarding. The qualified candidate must have the ability to argue legal positions effectively and persuasively, as well as master subject matter and prepare cases thoroughly. The ability to learn and accept constructive criticism is important as well as the ability to respond quickly and effectively in addressing issues and questions. The qualified applicant will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing as well as the ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments and remain organized. A valid driver's license and the means to travel to all courts and regional jails are required. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience working with criminal defense of indigent clients is preferred.
