Job Summary

This position is located in the District of Columbia (DC), Department of Human Services (DHS). The mission of DHS is to empower every District resident to reach their full potential by providing meaningful connections to work opportunities, economic assistance, and supportive services. Our approach to preventing homelessness and supporting individuals and/or families experiencing homelessness is focused both on systems-level reforms and on the quality of the programs and supports within that system. These efforts include creating economic opportunity, making our neighborhoods safer, and providing more effective and efficient government services.

The primary role of Case Managers is to help individuals become stable and self-sufficient through an array of social services, assessments, case management and crisis intervention services and will provide as- needed crisis intervention services for identified clients. The successful incumbents will provide case management services to clients with various programs in the Family Services Administration.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serves as the case manager and service coordinator for assigned clients. Facilitates and ensures collaboration amongst all agencies, providers, and individuals connected (and/or providing services) to assigned clients to ensure effective communication and appropriate overall coordination of care. Provides needed crisis intervention services for identified clients within DHS' programs as assigned.

The incumbent participates in the initial and comprehensive needs assessments for families to determine the family's level of functioning, existing strengths, barriers and extent of service intervention needed. Conducts goal-oriented consultations with immediate, extended family members, other involved service providers and significant others.

Qualifications and Education

Degree: a degree in a behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or four (4) years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

Or

Any combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

And

The applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled.

Working Conditions/Environment

The work environment includes an office setting and the work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Successful incumbents will also work outside within the communities served.

Other Significant Facts

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 8:15am to 4:45pm (This position may require working outside of normal tour of duty such as days, evenings and weekends).

Pay Plan, Series and Grade: CS-0101-09

Promotion Potential: Promotion Potential to CS-11

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is covered under a collective bargaining unit, and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as Emergency. Employees occupying positions designated as Emergency are required to:

  • Provide advice, recommendations, and/or specific functional support necessary for the continuity of operations during a declared emergency.

  • Remain at their duty station, or alternate work location (approved by their supervisor), if activated, when a situation or condition occurs and results in early dismissal for nonessential/non-emergency employees.

  • Report to their duty station, when activated, on time and as scheduled when a situation or condition occurs during non-work hours, and results in the late arrival or closing of District government offices for non-essential/non-emergency employees.

  • Telework during a declared emergency, instead of remaining or reporting to his or her duty station, if directed by the agency head (or designee), supervisor or manager.

  • Carry or wear their official District government ID card during the period of the declared emergency, if not teleworking.

Position Designation: This position has been deemed Protection Sensitive under the guidelines of the DC Personnel Manual.

Incumbents of this position are subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC personnel regulations. Accordingly, incumbents must successfully pass a criminal background and consumer credit check as a condition of employment and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of their tenure.
