Summary: Under direct supervision of Assistant Program Manager, responsible for providing housing placement, support and case management services for eligible homeless veteran families through outreach, assessment and engagement of potential members. Assist veterans and their families in finding and accessing requested community linkages and resources through the application of intensive case management services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: This is not an exhaustive task list, and other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate or necessary by the supervisor or program director.   • Interface with government, community and private agencies to obtain rental subsidies, subsidized loans or other available resources for transitional and permanent housing for veterans and their families. Actively assists and coaches members in all steps of completing the application process. Provides active follow-up during the application process, and acts as a housing counselor and advocate for members when necessary

  • Provide and/or arrange for necessary services for members moving into new housing. Provide or arrange for regular home visits, in-home case management support and community-based referrals to assist members in staying successfully housed. When necessary, act as a liaison with the landlord, other service providers or other tenants to clarify expectations and resolve issues and problems

  • Give individual and community-based presentations regarding MHALAs housing programs. Work actively with landlords and property management companies and generate housing opportunities through advocacy, information and education

  • Represent MHALA at community housing provider meetings, HUD-VASH and other meetings and events focused on homelessness and Veteran Homelessness. Work actively to stay current with technical and administrative changes in various housing programs and their requirements

  • Network with other veteran and mainstream service agencies to share ideas and resources, develop effective programs, solve common problems and maintain a professional network of referral resources for housing and support services. Read, perform research, attend classes, workshops or seminars and participate in other professional development activities in order to maintain and enhance personal and professional skills

  • Attend and participates in staff meetings and other aspects of the day-to-day operations and community life of the Agency. Work cooperatively with other staff to assure the smooth and seamless delivery of supportive services to the Agency and the veterans and their families it serves

  • Independently or in collaboration with Information Specialists, complete and maintain all records and documentation needed for program compliance and accountability in accordance with MHALA standards and funding source requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • One year of hands-on experience in rehabilitation services or housing services for disabled and/or homeless persons and/or relevant/equivalent experience in the private, public or military sector required. OR

  • One year of Military Service (Active, Reserve, and/or National Guard) may serve in lieu of required experience as needed. Employment contingent upon verification of DD214.

  • Driving with current class C drivers license, a vehicle for transportation, proof of valid automobile insurance, the ability to be insured by MHALA liability insurance are conditions of employment

  • Must function well in a team-oriented approach to member services

  • Must be or quickly become familiar with federal, state and local housing subsidy programs and the sources available for them

  • Must be or quickly become familiar with the practices and procedures for preparation of applications for subsidized housing and disabled/low income housing loans

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with public and private housing providers, mental health consumers and their family members or client advocates, vendors and other staff

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, writing skills and computer skills

  • Highly organized and detail oriented, and able to prioritize and juggle multiple projects without losing productivity

  • Flexible work schedule to include some evenings or weekends, and on call cell phone services when necessary.

  • TB clearance and re-testing every year are conditions of continued employment

Will work together with HUD-VASH and SSVF to put together regular inventory of available housing in community.
