Overview

This is a carpentry position that requires the incumbent to perform a variety of construction, maintenance and repair tasks of wooden articles, equipment and structures. This position also performs semi-skilled duties in locksmith, plumbing, air conditioning and painting, as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Engineer.

This role will pay an hourly wage of $38.71

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and studies sketches and building plans to ascertain information pertaining to types of materials required to complete tasks.

  • Selects specified types of lumber or other materials and shapes to prescribed measurements to erect building frames and other structures.

  • Make forms, erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures, repairs doors, door hardware, changes locks as requested, repair dollies and/or any materials made of wood, metal, plastic, etc.

  • Use a variety of manual and power tools common to carpentry trade to complete assigned tasks.

  • Make simple estimates of time and materials.

  • Performs skilled locksmith duties, from replacing and/or repairing locks to cutting keys and installing door closures, etc.

  • Performs skilled paint duties to include, preparing and painting walls and floors; staining sidewalks and staircases, etc.

  • Performs basic electrical duties, such as changing light bulbs, checking general electrical systems, etc.

  • Performs semi-skilled air conditioning duties such as changing air conditioning filters, blowing condensate drains, and assisting with the installation and/or repair of air conditioning equipment.

  • Performs skilled and/or semi-skilled plumbing duties, such as faucet and sink installations, installation of toilets, repair flush meters, etc.

  • Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, assists in the daily supervision of other skilled and semi-skilled trade employees.

  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position may supervise several other skilled and semi-skilled trade employees.

The employee is constantly required to exert various types of physical exertion, such as prolonged reaching, bending, kneeling, and lifting. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

WORKING CONDITIONS: While performing the responsibilities of the Carpenter, these work environment characteristics are representative of the environment the Carpenter will encounter.

The Carpenter works in indoor and outdoor work settings with mild to adverse exposure to environmental hazards. The incumbent must be able to climb stairs and ladders and walk long distances to access all areas of the facility.

The noise level in the work environment is usually mild to loud. Incumbents in this position work in varying settings and will be subject to noise and atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odor, dust, etc.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Knowledge of the techniques and tools, equipment or apparatus used in the carpentry trade. Some general training and/or experience with other skilled trades highly desired.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to read and write in English.

Good mathematical, organizational and attention to detail skills/abilities required. Person must be able to lift heavy objects of varying weight and size. Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials and tools used in the carpentry trade.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the carpentry trade. Ability to prepare and work from sketches and plans and to understand oral and written instructions Experience in the other skilled trades, such as locksmith, A/C, Plumbing, and paint.
