Position Title: Carpenter

Department: Facilities

Reports To: Assistant Director of Facilities

Classification: Non-Exempt

FTE: 1.0

Salary: $30/hr

Essential Job Duties:

1.General Carpenter Shop Responsibilities

  • Utilize maintenance software to complete requested work orders

  • Be self-motivated and has the ability to work independently

  • Accurately track and maintain time and material costs

  • Communicate with faculty, staff, and students

  • Assist in maintaining the safety and efficiency of all carpenter shop operations

  • Use a variety of tools, processes, materials, and equipment in completing assigned projects and work orders

2.Daily Jobs Task

  • Implement and develop standard maintenance procedures

  • Perform repairs on flooring and wall tile

  • Perform repairs on furniture and assorted fixtures

  • Investigate and perform minor repairs on building leaks, including leaks in commercial flat roof systems

  • Build shelves, cabinets, and other specialty items

  • Perform repairs on commercial doors, windows, and hardware

  • Perform rough and finish carpentry work for renovation and new construction

  • Install, tape, and finish drywall

  • Perform basic paint/plaster/drywall tasks

  • Perform concrete and masonry work

  • Communicate with outside contractors

  • Work with other tradespeople to complete tasks and projects

3.Support Campus Events

  • Coordinate work with various campus offices, departments, and individuals

  • Set up seating, shells, risers, and stages for special events

4.Support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community

5.Complete and meet deadlines for required training and performance management cycle

6.Perform other related duties as assigned

Work Schedule:

Term: Year-round

Shift: Monday

  • Friday, 7 a.m.

  • 3:30 p.m. overtime hours as required; travel up to 10% of work schedule, which includes local (Twin Cities metro area) travel. Flexible work arrangements may be proposed and are subject to approval by HR and relevant supervisors. Occasional evening and weekend hours as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English

  • Ability to interpret and build from construction drawings

  • Understanding of safe of operation of hand, power, and pneumatic tools

  • Ability to repeatedly lift up to 70 pounds

  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights

  • Ability to crawl and be on hands and knees for extended periods of time

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to problem solve and adapt to changing directions

  • Ability to work well as a team member as well as independently

  • Ability to perform high-quality work quickly

  • Ability to effectively meet and communicate with college faculty, staff, and students

  • Ability to train, organize, assign work to, and supervise student crews in the summer

  • Maintain a valid driver's license and meet St. Olaf College driver authorization criteria with a satisfactory driving record

  • Skills in using standard office equipment and computer applications, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases, or willingness to learn.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: 2+ years of rough carpentry; 2+ years in finished carpentry; Experience managing small crews

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with commercial flat roofing systems

  • Proficient use of the Google Workspace software

  • Skilled in computer-aided design
