Provides basic nursing care to residents within the scope of nursing assistant responsibilities and performs basic nursing procedures under the direction of a licensed nurse. Assist with dining services, care of resident laundry needs, and assist activity department with programming goals.


  • Performs nursing assistant duties in accordance with accepted standards of resident care. Duties may include: intake and output, measuring height and weight, vital signs, specimen collection, catheter care, range of motion exercises, etc.

  • Provides QMAP role administering residents medication treatments

  • Recognizes changes in the residents behavior and conditions

  • Cares for the dying resident and provides postmortem care

  • Assists licensed personnel by providing basic nursing care to an assigned group of residents

  • Provides personal care for residents as needed, including bathing, showering, shampooing, oral hygiene, skin care, hair care, nail care, dressing, shaving, toileting, transferring, turning and positioning, ambulating, and transporting

  • Responsible for participating in and supporting resident activity programs

Nutritional Care

  • Assists residents with nutritional needs, including serving, feeding, providing proper fluid requirements, and offering substitutions when appropriate

  • Provide snacks and assist with following dietary guidelines for each resident. (Examples: Low sugar, low salt, allergies, likes, and dislikes)

  • Create a congenial atmosphere in the dining area. Dementia needs positive customer service

Restorative Care

  • Encourages residents to develop and maintain independence

  • Aids with the use of assistance devices in transferring, ambulating, eating, and dressing

Infection Control and Safety

  • Demonstrates knowledge of infection control in all resident care to prevent the spread of disease and infection

  • Adheres to strict infection control guidelines and reports any and all exposures to infection in accordance with OSHA and Balfour Retirement Community guidelines, policies, and procedures

  • Follow infection control guidelines and policies when handling personal laundry and linen service

  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency policy and procedures

  • Demonstrates awareness of potential hazards and reports unsafe conditions to appropriate community staff to maintain a safe environment for residents, families, and staff (i.e., reports spill, faulty equipment, maintains a clear path for resident ambulation, uses wheel chair locks appropriately, etc.)


  • Utilizes community resources and maintains open communication with all community staff (i.e. dining services, life enrichment, social services, therapies, care manager, etc.)

  • Communicates skillfully with all residents, including those with sensory losses and/or dementia

  • Receives and gives report on residents conditions and changes in conditions to the care manager at the beginning and end of each shift

  • Observes and reports residents condition changes to the care manager immediately and exchanges resident information with the care manager on an on-going basis

  • Assists the staff or care manager in the development of the residents interdisciplinary service plan and uses the service plan information to provide daily resident care

  • Documents residents information accurately and on a daily basis on the appropriate forms

  • Resident Rights and In0service Education

  • Provides privacy and maintains confidentiality

  • Ensures the residents right to make personal choices in agreement with the residents service

  • Promotes residents participation in activities

  • Ensures care and security of residents personal possessions

  • Provides care that ensures residents are free from abuse, mistreatment, and neglect, and immediately reports any such instance to the appropriate community staff

  • Provides care to avoid the need for chemical restraints by maintaining a safe environment for residents

  • Attends all in-service education programs mandated by Balfour Retirement Community, state, and federal guidelines

  • Demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement in all job responsibilities


  • QMAP certified, or will obtain in 90 days

  • Knowledge and experience in bedside nursing required

  • Basic reading and writing skills and ability to speak English

  • Ability to read thermometers, charts, and testing equipment


  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and squat for prolonged periods

  • Ability to push and pull objects and lift and carry up to 55 pounds, unassisted

  • Full use of hands, arms, and legs (i.e., washing, feeding, and dressing residents, writing notations, etc.)

  • Willing to work beyond normal working hours, on weekends, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary

  • May be exposed to unpleasant odors, contagious diseases and blood borne pathogens

  • Balfour is a pet-friendly community; you may be exposed to animal hair and dander
