POSITION OVERVIEW:

Serve as a liaison between Western Technical College and businesses in and out of town that participate in our student internship and job placement programs. Develop and maintain effective business relationships with extern worksites while incorporating professionalism, respect, integrity, and compassion in all that they do. Ensure that graduates have employment interviews and that a percentage of graduates acquire employment in their field of study. Visit in-town and out-of-town employers and encourage them to visit Western Technical College, and recruit graduates.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with internship and employer sites sufficient in numbers to meet the needs of the campus' intern and graduate population.

  • Place students at internship sites to perform their extended training for hands-on purposes and where the student has the greatest probability of getting hired upon completion of the internship experience. Meet a minimum 50% benchmark of interns hired at the internship site and an overall 78% WTC benchmark.

  • Develop new internship sites monthly, with the goal of achieving graduate placement in accordance with the program's needs. Serve as liaison between the student and the internship site.

  • Assist students with the preparation, revision, and explanation of internship documents (resumes, cover letters, applications, immunizations, etc.).

  • Meet with the program director regularly (at a minimum, weekly), to discuss possible new internship sites and updates to current and previous ones.

  • Ensure that all students are confirmed with an appropriate internship site no less than two weeks prior to the internship's prescribed start date.

  • Discuss internship early and often, beginning at Orientation, by frequently holding workshops and in-class discussions regarding preparation steps for internship, best practices, and steps to overcoming common challenges.

  • Serve as liaison between students and the internship site.

  • Expected to visit students at their internship site at least once a week. For sites outside El Paso, communication can be handled via phone, email, and/or fax. The weekly evaluation form should be filled out by the employer and collected on the intern site by the Internship Coordinator on a weekly basis.

  • Ensure the student is fulfilling the requirements of the internship.

  • Focus on developing and maintaining healthy employer relationships that would foster new internship sites, while maintaining excellent communication with current internship sites. Twenty-five hours out of the office on a weekly basis to recruit new employers locally and out of town.

  • Maintain internship files for students in the student management system.

  • Maintain internship site database.

  • Support PAC Meetings in partnership with the Program Directors and Faculty by securing and tracking community participation.

  • Administer and maintain contracts, insurance certificates, and other documents for internship.

  • Assure compliance with all School policies and procedures.

  • Ensure that all graduate and employer surveys are sent out quarterly. Ensure that a majority of graduate and employer surveys sent out in any given month are responded to and returned to WTC.

  • Ensure all students receive a minimum of two (2) mock interviews as a requirement to graduate.

  • Conduct community surveys to gather labor market information, such as prevailing wages, hours, training, and employment possibilities.

  • Develop in-town and out-of-town employers.

  • Product knowledge and all other areas of self-study are required.

  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate Degree or a combination of education and work experience.

  • Welding hard trade knowledge is preferred.

  • A minimum of five years of experience in the customer service field.

  • Two years of experience in sales, employment, or related field.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • Must have and provide proof of the minimum legal insurance coverage on your vehicle.

  • Must be able to travel both locally and out of town, therefore must have dependable transportation.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours.

  • Must have a personal cell phone to be used with the MFA.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.

  • Ability to communicate with Spanish-speaking relatives of graduates to convey job leads.

  • Strong written, oral, and listening skills.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be customer service oriented.

  • Must be consistent in work performance and meeting deadlines.

  • Creativity and initiative.

  • Ability to operate a computer, copy machine, facsimile, scanner, phone system, and calculator.

  • Must possess excellent telephone etiquette.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates mostly in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The Career Services Coordinator will be exposed to a variety of environments of employer sites.

The employee frequently is required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
