Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

This position will oversee Southwest Virginia Community College's career services program, including the expansion of the program to better serve both current and potential students.

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of all career services, including the supervision of any assigned staff. The Coordinator manages the college-wide web-based job posting system, plans and coordinates career fairs and other career services focused events. The Coordinator assists students with using Career Center resources and materials in their career/aptitude exploration and decision making. The Coordinator also works with the Dean of Workforce and Continuing Education to improve and enhance the College's career services programs, including assisting with securing funding through partnerships, grants, etc. to support such improvements as well as provide outreach and develop partnerships with community businesses to promote students and programs. This position is also responsible for establishing and growing an internship program for internal and external audiences under the career services umbrella and evaluating the feasibility of a college apprenticeship program. The position will work closely with all student coaches.

This position requires a 12-month probationary period for both new hires and transfers.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

  • Ability to make front-line and important decisions is needed, in a multitasking and fast-paced atmosphere.

  • Must be able to successfully complete projects in a timely manner.

  • Effective oral and written communication with a wide variety of end users with varying competencies and needs,especially with students, college leadership, partners, and the private sector.

  • Ability to operate computer equipment, understands and applies written and oral directions, technical manualsand procedural guides.

  • Provides assistance and guidance for employees in all matters related to workforce and career servicesprograms.

  • Provides presentations for both the private sector (companies) and end users of the College's workforce,continuing education, and career services.

  • Demonstrates the ability to plan and organize multiple projects simultaneously and work both independently andwith teams/groups, maintain effective working relationships with a diverse population.

  • Ability to effectively supervise employees who serve under the position, and coordinate and assist other teammembers who work under the Dean of Workforce and Continuing Education.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Outlook, & Publisher).

  • Public speaking and presentation design/implementation is required.

  • Proven ability to work effectively independently in various scenarios, with deadlines is required.

Additional Considerations

  • Understanding of workforce, continuing education, and career services is desired.

  • Experience with local and regional workforce initiatives and partnerships.

  • Project, office, and team management skills.
