JOB DESCRIPTION

This position (Success Coach: Career Services and Academic Success) is under the supervision of the Director of The Office of Career and the Assistant Dean of Center for Student Success. The position will be split between the areas of Career Services and Center for Student Success- Academic Success & Student Retention. Newberry College is seeking a Career Coach to provide support and guidance to all students regarding the development and implementation of activities related to career services, including employer outreach/relations, event planning and facilitation (workshops, presentations, and career fairs), record and data management, and individual career support and guidance.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Career Success Coach (50% of position)

  • Assist with individual student appointments and classroom presentations (including Col 102 career exploration), and campus career workshops.

  • Design and lead at least one medium size intensive workshop per semester such as mock interviews and etiquette lunch, mocktails, and networking events.

  • Assist with large scale career/grad school fairs.

  • Manage and promote the career clothing closet.

  • Assist with Final Destination Survey follow up outreach.

  • Manage social media presence/accounts and complete a social media content assessment and improvement plan.

Academic Success Coach (50% of position)

  • Provides academic assistance and advising to a select group of students (populations vary-undeclared, academic at risk, first year students, etc.)

  • Manages a caseload of assigned students, providing them with academic assistance; monitors students; academic progress, and works closely and collaboratively with coaches, faculty, and staff to develop needed interventions to ensure their academic success.

  • Provides academic assistance and advising to a select group of students (populations vary- undeclared, academic at risk, first year students, etc...)

  • Manages a caseload of assigned students, providing them with academic assistance; monitors students' academic progress, and works closely and collaboratively with coaches, faculty, and staff to develop needed interventions to ensure their academic success.

  • Outreach assigned students as needed - based on current targeted initiative/program- calling, texting, emailing students until desired messaging is received.

  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and monitor academic plans for assigned students- including regular scheduled meetings and providing appropriate academic assistance.

  • Initiates and coordinates creative student success programs and services to better meet the needs of students, which may include campus tutoring, programs to support first generation and undecided students, peer mentoring, athletic enrichment, etc.

  • Responds to student issues and concerns; works closely with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction with the program and successful progress to completion.

  • Provides regular updates to Assistant Dean concerning retention risks and intervention support, and effective solutions where appropriate.

  • Teaches the first-year seminar course and/or academic skills class as requested by Assistant Dean.

  • Serve as primary contact person for Academically Ineligible Students - working with Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

  • Attend CSS staff meetings, SIT, RAG, and assist with AORI, as needed.

  • Member of a dynamic staff who works collaboratively with campus partners to develop programs, interventions and strategic initiatives to promote student success and persistence.

  • Other duties as assigned by Director of The Office of Career and the Assistant Dean of Center for Student Success.

EDUCATIONAL OR OTHER HIRING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

Bachelor's degree required, however a Master's degree in counseling, education, student development or a field in higher education HIGHLY preferred. Two years of related higher education experience.

Minimum of two years' experience in programming and presenting workshops/teaching. Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations. Must be able to work independently, as part of a team, and to lead others. Must be articulate and able to present well in writing, verbally, and via technology. Global Career Development Facilitator Certified (preferred).

  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to prioritize and perform a variety of projects and assignments simultaneously and in a timely manner whether in the office or traveling.

  • Operate effectively in both independent and team environments.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (oral and written) in both individual and group settings.

  • Work independently at a high-pace and in a highly accountable office.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
