JOB SUMMARY: Career Guides supporting Entry Pathways will be part of a new small team at ACOE launching an ambitious effort to increase the number of educators to enter the educator workforce in Alameda County.

The Career Guides will support Entry Pathway through focused efforts of supporting individuals from high school through postsecondary who aim to enter and grow as professionals in the field of education. Additionally, Entry Pathway Career Guides will also support the broader work of the Professional Advancement Teaching Hub (P.A.T.H) Department within Alameda County Office of Education by connecting community members to educator opportunities within the agency and greater county partners. Entry Pathways Career Guides will receive extensive training on options for high school and postsecondary educator preparation programs and provide intensive, ongoing one-on-one and small group advising to Entry Pathway cohorts in Alameda County.

The Entry Pathway Career Guides will also support the guidance capacity of staff in schools, educational partner organizations, and community organizations across the county through the development of guidance materials and professional development. Lastly, Entry Pathway Career Guides may help teachers and guidance staff plan effective sessions to share with their communities as well as design sessions to support the journeys of the Entry Pathways cohorts.

THE POSITION: The Career Guide is responsible for illuminating career opportunities to youth and community members in Alameda County, supporting them as they navigate through entry steps, including enrolling in coursework, pre-apprenticeships, and apprenticeships and providing guidance to support sustained employment.

This position at Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) represents a shift away from community members navigating career pipelines individually and seeks to make entry into careers a supported, collective, and positive experience. It is a part of our effort to dramatically improve counseling supports for the 60%+ students who do not attend 4-year college directly after high school, helping those young adults make strategic, career oriented post-secondary choices that honor immediate financial pressures, long-term needs for stable, living wage careers, and their potential to develop into experts and leaders in essential careers in Alameda County. Career guides support navigation through pipelines into the skilled trades, into the education sector, into behavioral and mental health careers, and may provide support for navigating pipelines across multiple industry sectors.

Career Guides will typically orient their work toward helping to meet staffing needs either in a specific industry or field or across multiple industry sectors.

Career Guides will track the career progress of the youth and community members they serve over multiple years. This job reports to the assigned administrator. 313 W.

Winton Ave, Hayward, CA 94544 TYPICAL DUTIES: Provide intensive, ongoing one-on-one and small group postsecondary advising to targeted high school juniors, seniors, and recent high school graduates. Assist young adults in applying and registering for a broad range of postsecondary training programs and jobs.

Maintain open lines of communication with parents of young adults receiving guidance, enlisting their support for the career plans developed through your guidance. Provide tutoring and/or assist youth to obtain tutors or other supplemental academic support when needed in preparation for skills tests. Write letters of recommendation for youth when needed.

Assist youth in planning steps required to make fully informed decisions regarding their career path, including visits to colleges, programs, and workplaces, conducting informational interviews with others in their targeted field, and engaging in other forms of research. Successful completion of an Associate's Degree (AA), Career Certification from a community college or trade school, apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship, or job training program required. Experience: Three or more years of full-time related experience required. This can be a combination of the following:

School counselor, Teacher, College / Career Specialist, Work-Based Learning Liaison, case manager, or similar position in a school or in a nonprofit youth development organization and/or Work in the target field of this Career Guide position if specified.
