Position Overview

For the Career Development and Alumni Director role, we are excited to connect with candidates who are experienced and passionate about youth development for 18-25 year olds. The Director ensures that our ~150 City Year Philadelphia AmeriCorps members (or Student Success Coaches) from diverse backgrounds remain engaged during a rewarding and challenging service year and beyond. This role is responsible for developing and executing activities to support a powerful and meaningful service experience, Leadership After City Year (LACY), and Student Success Coach (SSC) alumni engagement. As a member of the Impact Director Team and the Site Leadership Team, the Director reports to the Managing Director of Impact. They are expected to collaborate effectively across departments to ensure that the sequence and planning of SSC training and activities are aligned and practical. The Director cultivates and manages external partnerships that support these goals.

Job Description

LACY (Leadership After City Year) - Design and project manage scope & sequence for LACY - 30%

  • Develop programs and initiatives to support and enhance SSC LACY and networking

  • Engage external partnerships to enhance and support varied LACY interests

  • Develop and lead ongoing communication to SSCs about the LACY and Signing Day events

  • Execute survey and collect Corps survey results to inform LACY programming and planning

  • Build out multiple pathways and partnerships for Student Success Coaches (SSCs) to pursue post service avenues

Student Success Coach (SSC) Experience Support

  • 25%
  • Develop and collaborate with the Impact Team on all AmeriCorps member recognition and appreciation activities

  • Support in partnership with the people team, Corps affinity and learning groups

  • Develop a directory of resources to support SSCs needing housing and other basic needs resources

  • Create clear processes for SSCs to understand and access their benefits (health, Corps Assistance Program, counseling support services, etc.)

  • Serve as a liaison to the AmeriCorps Member Experience Department at City Year Headquarters

  • Manage mid-year SSCs during training until they are placed on school teams

Alumni Support

  • 25%
  • Oversee and support the exit process for all SSCs

  • Develop and expand the local SSC alumni outreach program to reengage their connection with City Year Philadelphia

  • Serve as the site point and work with Headquarters to enhance the alumni experience

  • Develop a minimum of four (one per quarter) alumni engagement events

Returning AmeriCorps Member (RACM) Recruitment and Confirmed AmeriCorps Member (CACM) Engagement

  • 15%
  • Plan and inform/excite SSCs and Impact staff about the Returning AmeriCorps Member (RACM) application, interview and selection Process

  • Prepare staff for effective interviewing and recommendations to select RACMs

  • Coordinate interview scheduling; oversee and participate in a RACM selections committee

  • Support the notification of ACMs regarding their RACM status

  • In collaboration with the Impact Team, develop and support the site's approach to CACM engagement in partnership with regional Admissions staff

  • Troubleshoot with incoming ACMs, as needed, to ensure a smooth transition to the start of service

Organizational Initiatives & Site Support

  • 5%
  • Support the PennServe partnership as determined by the Managing Director of Impact

  • Serve as a member of the City Year Site Leadership Team (SLT), providing strategic insight into site priorities

  • Engage in structured discussion and training on diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging aimed at developing stronger cultural competency, both individually and collectively as a site

  • Participate in relevant network-wide meetings and calls; provide insight, feedback, and collective problem solving

  • Serve as a member of the site's Staff Development Team, a committee of the SLT that collaborates regularly to align professional development and employee engagement efforts across departments

  • Partner with City Year Philadelphia's departments and staff to ensure that site-wide goals are met, including, but not limited to, the AmeriCorps member applicant interview process, stakeholder engagement, event and service day participation, and cross-departmental committees

  • Attend overnight conferences as needed

  • Participate in site-wide events throughout the year, including Back to School Block Party, MLK Day, Red Jacket Gala, and Graduation

  • Additional responsibilities as needed, including department or site-wide special projects

Skills, Knowledge, and Experiences

  • 4+ years of relevant professional experience in the support and career development of 18-25 year olds (preferably in non-profit, social services, or educational settings)

  • Bachelor's Degree or 2 additional years of experience

  • Ability to translate an organization or department's vision into an operating plan, effectively communicate that plan and timeline to collaborators, establish goals for accountability, and monitor performance

  • Human resources (HR) experience plus

  • Effective systems builder and developer of process and protocols, ability to socialize tools for department and site

  • Strong ability/initiative to work independently and collaborate with folks with diverse needs, expectations, and perspectives, including those not in direct line of authority

  • Efficient time management skills; ability to manage multiple highly detailed projects and tasks simultaneously

  • Experience developing and executing professional development and engagement activities for young adults, volunteers, and/or peers

  • Experience with building and maintaining external partnerships

  • Awareness of, commitment to, and experience with promising workplace practices grounded in diversity, belonging, inclusion, and equity (DBIE)

  • Ability to excel in an energetic, entrepreneurial, and rapidly-changing workplace and work the flexible hours needed of a deadline-driven position

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office platforms required; experience using SharePoint preferred

  • City Year and/or AmeriCorps experience, a plus but not required
