Job Summary / Basic Function

Under direction of the Executive Director of the Career Center, the Assistant Director/Career Coach is a full-time, professional position responsible for the design and implementation of a variety of in-person and virtual services and programs that address the career readiness and development needs of students and alumni, and the staffing needs of employers and agencies.

Duties include:

  • Blended Career Coaching (80%)

  • Provide career related educational services, programs, resources, and tools to students in individual, group, and classroom settings through blended (e.g., in-person, hybrid, and virtual) modalities.

  • Offer drop in and scheduled individual in-person and virtual appointment times to support students and recent alumni.

  • Assist students with career exploration (e.g., self-evaluation and diagnostic tools), career readiness and development, professional documentation preparation (e.g., resume/cover letter), interview preparation, internship/practicum, job search strategies, and other topics, using but not limited to MS Office, MS Teams, Zoom, learning management system, career management system, and career development/exploration software and assessments.

  • Serves as a career liaison with academic department(s) to collaborate, adapt, and implement career education programming to increase student engagement with services, skill development, and career opportunities. Design, facilitate, implement, and evaluate curriculum and programs for campus partners to serve the needs of students.

  • Experiential Learning and Employer Engagement (15%)

  • Assists in the development and coordination of employer and agency partnerships, and the coordination of on- and off-campus career community specific in-person, hybrid, and virtual events related to career liaison area(s).

  • Effectively utilizes the Career Management System (CMS) to assist in connecting students and alumni with employment and career information to include but not limited to learning CMS modules, promoting CMS and employment opportunities to stakeholders, building content, and entering relevant coaching appointment details.

  • Represents the Career Center and University through building relationships at relevant off-campus recruiting and networking events, participating in consortium job fair organizations, (e.g., WestPACS, PERC (Pittsburgh Education Recruitment Consortium)), and joining professional development associations (e.g., PennACE, NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers)).

  • Graduate and Student Assistant Staffing (5%)

  • Participates in the recruitment, hiring, and training of graduate assistants, student assistants, and interns.

  • Oversees work of assigned graduate assistants, student assistants and/or interns as it pertains to position responsibilities through direct evaluation.

  • Performs other related duties as required

  • Work with the Career Center team to plan, promote, and implement the strategic plan.

  • Actively participate in and contribute to student success initiatives and events as identified by department and university leadership.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to use coaching strategies and techniques to support students.

  • Demonstrated ability to function as part of a team and to plan, organize, evaluate, manage, and delegate details associated with specific programs or projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work one-on-one and collaboratively with a broad range of constituents (e.g., students, supervisors, faculty, staff, alumni, and employers).

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral (e.g. presentation experience).

  • Operate office hardware and software such as MS Office, MS Teams, Zoom, learning management system, career management system, and career development/exploration software and assessments.

  • Demonstrated competency to oversee multiple tasks with attention to detail.

  • Initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing program improvements.

  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse students, faculty, staff, and community constituents.

Minimum of Education / TrainingRequired Education Summary

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 3 years of experience relevant to the position's responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business, education, counseling, student affairs, or related field or discipline whose preparation is suitable for this position.

  • At least one year of experience in career development or related roles within or outside of higher education (e.g. academic advising, teaching, student affairs, recruitment/HR, coaching, communication, etc.).

  • Experience in career services or with career development theories and techniques such as

  • individual and group coaching techniques;

  • skills to assist individuals with career decision and development concerns;

  • current knowledge of employment and career planning materials;

  • knowledge of alternative approaches to career development and planning needs for individuals with special needs - minorities, older jobseekers, etc.

  • Experience working with and understanding the needs/experience of students of color, first-generation students, and students with high financial need.
