The Cardiothoracic Surgery PA works closely with the supervising physician to coordinate a course of treatment for patients: perform histories, physical exams, pre and postoperative care, patient education, and discharge. The Cardiothoracic Surgery PA will also perform procedures such as first assist in surgery, vein harvesting, and the placement and removal of chest tubes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Safeguards and preserves the confidentiality of patient's protected health information in accordance with State and Federal (HIPAA) regulatory requirements, hospital and departmental policies.
Ensures a safe patient environment and adherence to safety practices per policy.
Takes thorough histories, performs appropriate physical examination and makes an assessment and diagnosis there from; records and presents pertinent diagnosis data in a manner meaningful to the patient and family.
Completes pre and post operative patient care, patient education, and discharge summaries.
Orders routine laboratory and screening procedures, and therapeutic procedures as necessary/indicated.
Administers or furnishes medication or transmits an oral or written prescription for medication or treatment within scope of practice.
Write and transmit orders, records patient progress notes and rounds on patients.
Provides complete and compliant clinical documentation to facilitate quality patient care and compliant coding and billing.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objective, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, ongoing review of current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
With consideration to age, employee utilizes the approved process to resolve biophysical, psychological, educational and environmental needs of patient/significant other when administering care.
Recognizes and evaluates situations which call for immediate attention of the physician, and when necessary, institutes emergency treatment procedures essential for the life of the patient and on the phone.
Instructs and counsels patients regarding matters pertaining to their physical and mental health, such as diets, social habits, family planning, age appropriate development, aging process and specialty specific education.
Provides specialty instructions to patients and/or family members.
May provide telephone care during regular office hours and pre-determined "after-hours."
May work with other clinical staff in the hospital in arranging hospital and nursing home admission, writing orders, providing services to patients requiring continuing care, including the review of treatment and therapy plans.
Initiates the referral of patients to the appropriate health facilities, agencies and resources of the community.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Current California Physician Assistant license
Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant School
One to three (1-3) years direct patient care clinical experience.
One to three (1-3) years of surgical first assist experience
Evidence of continuing education and self-development to support license requirements
Board Certification: Board certified or board eligible
