The Department of Surgery is seeking a dynamic, innovative Cardiothoracic Surgeon who has the leadership and vision to build a state-of-the-art clinical and research program at UW Health. The incumbent will have a leadership position in heart failure surgery for the UW system, including heart transplantation and ventricular assist. Close collaboration with heart failure cardiology in a multidisciplinary program is expected.

VIEW JOBS 9/7/2018 12:00:00 AM 2018-12-06T00:00 The Perfusion Manager is responsible for the overall management of the Department of Perfusion Services. This involves the management of perfusionists and ECMO specialists, the daily direction of work assignments, on call responsibilities, inventory management and capital equipment purchase. The manager is independently responsible for a wide range of mechanical life support systems. This position is based in the Surgical Services Department, but due to the nature of the work, provides clinical service throughout the hospital on a wide range of patients ranging from the neonate to the octogenarian. The manager works as a Perfusionist and conducts Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) independently, working closely with the surgeons, anesthesiologist and nursing staff to tailor the perfusion to the needs of each patient. This position is responsible for monitoring and maintaining a variety of patient parameters during CPB including the regulation of blood pressure, heart rate, urinary output, arterial and venous blood gasses, acid/base status, blood coagulation, temperature and myocardial protection. The Perfusionist constantly assesses the mechanical parameters of the circuit, evaluates and interprets any patient or mechanical response, and corrects for situations that can be life threatening. The Perfusionist must remain alert, attentive and respond appropriately to changes and problems. The Perfusion Manager is responsible for assisting with a variety of clinical teaching and training topics throughout the hospital for resident physicians, clinical fellows, perfusion students, advanced practice providers, registered nurses and respiratory therapists. Perfusion expertise is provided for the Cardiothoracic and Transplant Surgery research teams and varies per project protocol. The Perfusion Manager has call responsibilities appropriate for the clinical services required. The individual must respond to on call situations within thirty minutes. This position works nights, weekends and holidays. Exposures to potentially hazardous blood products are also a concern due to the nature of the mechanical circuitry. Education: Minimum - Bachelor's degree in science or health care field; certificate degree in Cardiopulmonary or Cardiovascular Perfusion. Preferred - Master's degree in Cardiopulmonary or Cardiovascular Perfusion Work Experience: Minimum - Five (5) years of clinical experience providing CPB for adult cardiac surgical procedures including; coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacements, and aortic aneurysm repairs. Preferred - Ten (10) years of experience as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP). Experience in pediatric cardiac, VAD and transplant procedures. Prior leadership and/or management experience. Licenses & Certifications: Minimum - Licensed Perfusionist in the State of Wisconsin; Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) recognized by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: * Demonstrates accountability for independent and interdependent decision making. * Demonstrates understanding of cardiac, congenital pediatrics, pulmonary, vascular and orthotopic transplantation procedures. * Clinical knowledge of the process for providing Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) for adult cardiac surgical procedures including; Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), valve replacements, and aortic aneurysm repairs. * Clinical knowledge of the process for providing CPB for ventricular assist device implantation, and congenital pediatric procedures. * Familiarity with techniques of IABP, intraoperative autotransfusion and management of ECMO and LVAD/RVAD. * Ability to provide identified technical skills to patients of all ages including: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. * Physical requirements include the ability to work long hours remaining alert and attentive to the duties at hand. * Demonstrates technical ability, understanding of job expectations and compliance with organizational policies and procedures. * Ability to remain alert, attentive and respond appropriately to changes and problems. Physical Requirements: Light: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Work Schedule: * 100% FTE, 40 hours per week. * Any shift * Weekend rotation * Hours may vary based on the operational needs of the department.
