With over 40 pediatric specialties and more than 400 physicians, it is the only full-service hospital exclusively for children in Louisiana and the Gulf South.# We invite you to experience the magic of Children#s#Hospital.# POSITION SUMMARY The pediatric sonographer, working under the delegated authority of the supervising physician, is responsible for performing standard and complex congenital echocardiograms.# The patient population ranges from neonates to adults.# The sonographer must be adept at working with normal and congenital patients with a wide variety of complex medical and psychosocial conditions.# Must be technology-minded, detail oriented and able to follow directions.# ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSABILITITES ####################################################################### # Performs echocardiograms with accuracy and precision. Prepare the patient for testing, perform the test, provide data to the cardiologist with minimal supervision and prepare a preliminary report for the reading physician.# Responds to changes in priority promptly. Writes preliminary reports in a timely manner.

Discusses studies with staff and physicians. Must be able to learn and adapt to a variety of equipment, software and protocols. Capable of performing a diagnostic quality echocardiogram with a interrogation of normal and abnormal cardiac and extracardiac anatomy on patients of all ages, from newborn to adult.

Able to perform diagnostic quality echocardiograms on difficult or uncooperative patients with assistance. Capable of performing all quantitative measurements from M-Mode, 2D and Doppler studies. Understands the physics of ultrasound, physics of blood flow and bioeffects of ultrasound.

Develop knowledge of cardiac anatomy and hemodynamics related to congenital heart disease.# Able to recognize all simple congenital heart defects and # 50% of complex congenital heart defects with assistance. # Applies organizational skills toward testing of both inpatients as well as outpatients. Completes a preliminary report on all tests performed for physician review. Identifies indications and limitations of exams and procedures.

Performs other department duties needing attention as dictated by workload, availability of staff and abilities. Inventory specific supplies needed to perform duties, stock necessary supplies to perform studies. Participates in performance improvement as requested. Stocks linen and supplies.# Ensures rooms and equipment are clean and ready for use throughout the day.


Availability to perform urgent echocardiograms on a


24 - hour basis. Accepts rotating on call assignments as scheduled within the department of cardiology.

Responds to on call requests in a timely manner. # Professional Development and Quality Improvement Maintain the necessary hours of continuing medical education per ARDMS and IAC requirements.# Sonographers are strongly encouraged to be members of the ASE or other pediatric echocardiography society and obtain a majority of their CEU#s through these societies. Attend at least 50% of the echocardiography lab quality assurance reviews and at least 2-3 weekly catheterization conferences per quarter to enhance knowledge and performance in regards to congenital heart disease. Attendance at the echocardiography conference is expected unless there is a clinical emergency.

Perform and maintain quality control and preventative maintenance of the diagnostic equipment that meets manufacturer#s recommendations. Capable of objectively reviewing and critiquing echocardiograms done by self and others. Attend self-improvement classes.

Engages in quality improvement activities of echocardiography studies in accordance with IAC standards. Participates and attends in-services pertaining to Cardiology. Seeks out additional opportunities for professional development such as seminars and CEU activities.

Maintains high standards to achieve quality patient care. # Research and Precepting Participation Participate in educational presentations under the direction of the medical director.
