Under general supervision, and with medical consultation and direction, performs physical, psycho-social assessment; establishes medical diagnosis; orders and evaluate diagnostic tests; manages follow up care; does other related work as required. Responsibilities include performing physical examinations, developing treatment plans, ordering and interpreting lab tests and results, along with providing preventative healthcare and counseling.

Northside Cardiac Surgery is seeking a Surgical Physician Assistant to join our growing surgical APP team. The team consists of 4 Cardiac Surgeons and 6 Cardiac Surgery PA’s. Incoming PA will be involved with complex CV surgical cases as part of a team of highly specialized physicians and assistants.

Rounding primarily in the CVICU Endoscopic Vein & Radial Artery harvest using the Maquet and or Terumo systems First assistant as needed: cases include CABG, aortic and mitral valve repair/replacement, ECMO Insertion Perform procedures such as central line placement, arterial line placement and chest tube placement. Conducts patient interviews and documents patient histories, psychosocial histories, health status and medical problems or potential problems. Under the direction of a physician, performs physical examinations and specialized diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures including CABG, AVR, MVR, aortic surgery, VATS, placement and management of chest tubes wound suturing and dressing changes.

Orders, schedules and/or performs laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures such as urinalyses, pregnancy and blood tests, and x-rays. Communicates necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled procedures to patient. In collaboration with physician, arranges for consultations with or referrals to other medical professional or community services.

Educates patient on health habits, self-examinations, behavior management, need for follow-up assessments/treatments, at home medical care, medication and other issues related to medical or health problems. Maintains and updates current, accurate patient records including medical assessment, interventions, and evaluations. Participates in the care and medical decision making for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patients.

Required A college degree as a Physician's Assistant from a recognized university, affiliated with a medical school. Master’s Degree in Nursing. Preferred Minimum 2 years of experience as a Cardiac Surgery PA/Nurse Practitioner.

Proficient in endoscopic vein harvest with Maquet and or Terumo systems. Schedule/Call Rotation Daily, Weekend and Holiday On-Call assignments are split evenly amongst the 6 surgical PA’s.
