Occ Summary

Perform daily clinical operations of Echocardi ography includingperforming Echocardiograms, entering preliminary interp retation,covering all sites and shifts including call coverage.

Work Performed

Level IDemonstrates proficiency byperforming r outine and emergencyechocardiograms, including but not limited to 2-dime nsional, 3-dimensional, Doppler, Transesophageal, and Stress Echocardiog ram, asrequested by physician and in accordance with standard practices. Provides echocardiography service at all necessary locations, workingvar iable shifts, weekends, and providing emergent call coverage asscheduled .Operate equipment necessary to perform all required procedures and toob tain optimal diagnostic recording; utilize ancillary devices such assele cted transducers, digital networking system, off-line analysissystems. Maintain equipment in working order, making minor adjustmentsand repairs .Perform routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, andreport any equipme nt malfunction to echo lab manager.Analyze patient's medical recordtoob tain history of symptoms andnecessary information for performance of dia gnostic procedures.Prepares preliminary reports for review and interpret ation byCardiologist, including comparison of previous studies.Participa te in quality improvement activities; evaluate procedureresults for tech nical quality and accuracy; maintain appropriate logs,files, and records . Functions as an expert resource, toi nstruct other cardiac sonographerswith in-services and educationregardi ng performance and preliminary interpretation of theseprocedures.Perform s quality assurance to ensure that all the necessaryechocardiography dat a are obtained for the patient on the basis ofclinical history and prese ntation.

Formulating and ensuring consistentimplementation of exam prot ocols.Provides in-service education and case reviews for staff cardiacso nographers in collaboration with the Echocardiography TechnicalManager c oncerning new methods and techniques that are to beincorporated intothe echocardiography exam.Maintains up to date all laboratory policies and p rocedures.Collaborates with Technical Manager and Medical Director for r eviewannually, or as necessary for revision of all clinicalpolicies andp rocedures specific to Echocardiography.Ensures all ICAEL requirements ar e met and maintained. Staffinformation, CMEs, policies and procedures, protocols, etc. are updatedannually to meet ICAEL requirements. Staff is updated on all ICAELchanges.

Organizes and prepares ICAEL applicatio n to maintain anaccredited status.Education FocusParticipates as a Lead Clinical Instructor in the EchocardiographyDepartment.Participates in cl inical education for students, residents and/orfellows specifically related to physics and image acquisition.Provides technical assistance in re search studies on newechocardiography techniques and technology initiate d by Duke, otherhospitals and vendors through attending meetings and lea rning newtechniques on acquiring images.Assists Echocardiography Technic al Manager with quality measures andoutcome data to ensurea high level e chocardiography lab.Clinical Lead FocusSupervisory Responsibility-YesSup port for the Echocardiography service when themanager is unavailable. T he Clinical Lead is responsible forsupervising, directing,coaching, and mentoring their assigned coregroup of staff.Evaluates staff, provides fe edback, documents and directly monitorsquality performance at each site. Directs orientation, provides guidance, and constructively influencessta ff morale.

Instruct and educate visiting students, technologists andphys icians about our procedures, computers and departmental functions.Provid es Echo technical direction/functional advice and directsupervision to s taff. Interacts and communicates with physicians,supportstaff,and other health care professionals to facilitatedepartmental operations

Monitors the status of equipment repairs and preventative maintenance,gathers dat a on equipment malfunction and associated down time, anddocuments the ef fects on patient care. Assures compliance withdepartment and institutio nal policies, procedures, and regulations.Assist with site specific pers onnel functions including hiring, annualevaluations, development & implementation of existing departmentalpolicies. Coordinatestaff scheduling, and maintain payroll timereports.Communicates information to staff in su pport management decisions.Assist the Technical Manager in evaluation an d selection of capitalequipment.Enhance professional growth and developm ent of department staff throughleadership participation in educational p rograms, current literature,in-service meetings and workshops.Maintain w orking knowledge of resources available to the department andemployees in developing work skills, employee benefits, continuingeducation and ass uring that hospital requirements are met.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Graduate or completion of program that meets eligibilityrequirements for registry/certification or currently holds required registry or certification.

Experience

None required beyond above education/certification requirements. Level I - Must obtain ARDMS certifications as required by each entity within 18 months of employment.

Level II - Minimum of two years' experience as a Sonographer. Level III A minimum of 4 years' experience within specialty modality in which they are seeking promotion.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

ARDMS/CCI certification in Echocardiography ARDMS/CCI certification within 18 months of hire BLS certification
