Job Summary:

Monitors, records, interprets and reports ECG Rhythms at monitoring station. Must be extremely accurate in arrhythmia recognition and interpretation.

Performs electrocardiogram tracings in specified situations. Correctly transcribes physician orders as well as performing other unit secretary duties. Interfaces with public, physicians and hospital departments to enhance communication.

Visually monitors patient cardiac rhythms at central monitoring station, documents rhythms according to unit standards, accurately measures ECG intervals.

Demonstrates basic knowledge of pharmacological effects of cardiac drugs on cardiac rhythms. Notifies appropriate nursing/medical personnel of changes in ECG rhythm or intervals.

Immediately recognizes changes in ECG rhythm, rapidly interprets severity of arrhythmia and notifies appropriate nursing/medical personnel accordingly.

Has working knowledge of central monitoring station and 12 lead ECG machine, able to perform initial troubleshooting of problems with equipment, notifies charge nurse and/or Biomedical of persistent problems.

Performs 12 electrocardiograms as per unit standards.

Performs unit secretary duties for order transcription as well as other clerical duties as assigned.

Precepts new employees including RNs, Cardiac Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries and Cardiac Care Technician students. Effectively demonstrates central monitoring station, monitoring procedures and clerical duties.

Communicates effectively with members of the public, hospital medical staff, hospital departments and unit staff. Demonstrates calm and professional demeanor in dealing with conflict referring others to charge nurse or manager as appropriate.

Participates in unit quality assurance and service excellence programs.

Performs job roles quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Demonstrates ability to prioritize and multitask.


Education: Successful completion of Palmetto Health Intermediate Level Arrhythmia Course and testing is required. High school diploma, GED or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Minimum of one year experience as Cardiac Care Tech, Unit Secretary, ECG Tech, Advanced EMT or Nursing Tech.

Special Training: Must pass Basic Arrhythmia and Pharmacological Effects on ECG tests with > 83%; must be able to perform 12 lead ECG; must possess knowledge and skills of how to serve adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

This academy encompasses Adult Acute Care and specialty nursing care to a variety of units. This is more than a traditional orientation program. Clinical content and experience is diverse and includes the areas of oncology, orthopaedics, cardiac and surgical services. Educators and clinical experts teach and mentor new graduate nurses through core curriculum classes, simulation and hands-on learning experiences. Along with professional development and a supportive group-setting, graduates of this academy will emerge as confident and well-rounded in their specialty.
