Job Summary

This safety-sensitive position coordinates the CARA swim team program. Exercising a high degree of discretion, trust, and confidence to properly execute duties, this position manages program aspects including, but not limited to team activities, meetings, and all program events.

Examples of Essential Duties

Develops detailed workouts and conducts swim practices for the CARA swim team program.

Assists the Recreation Coordinator 2 - Aquatics in the administrative functions associated with the CARA swim team program.

Serves as point of contact for participants' parents/guardians, manages all communication related to the CARA swim team program.

Provides a positive and enjoyable environment for program participants, interacts in a pleasant and professional manner.

Upholds facility safety guidelines and follows all applicable policies and procedures including, but not limited to Parker Aquatics Instructor Guidelines, responsible for the safety of all program participants.

Ensures practice area is safe, set up and clean, prior to and following each practice; begins practices on time and in an organized manner.

Ensures all necessary equipment and supplies are present and in proper working order prior to each practice, alerts staff designee of any broken or low stock items. Communicates equipment/supply needs to staff designee prior to practice.

Assists in the preparation, set-up, and take down of swim meets, completes administrative preparations for all swim meets and organizes volunteers as needed.

Collaborates with the Recreation Coordinator 2 - Aquatics and other coaches to determine coaching schedules for the season, ensures the presence of one (1) CARA coach at every practice.

Provides supervision to assistant coaches and assists in the evaluation process.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Attends meetings and trainings as assigned.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be 17 years of age or older.

Possession of current First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of hire.

One (1) year more of swim team coaching experience is preferred.

Possession of current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent course is preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of general pool operations and pool safety rules sufficient to create and enforce a safe environment for course participants and pool patrons.

Skill in the provision of customer service.

Ability to demonstrate professional behavior as a representative of the Town of Parker.

Ability to learn and the skill necessary to implement proper teaching techniques.

Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive, working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Ability to provide proper instruction using both verbal description and physical demonstration.

Ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action using problem-solving techniques.

Ability to assist in the safe rescue and retrieval of an individual from the pool or assist and individual suffering from a medical condition.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Various equipment used to maintain the pool in the appropriate condition. Tools and equipment required for the safe rescue/resuscitation of individuals in an emergency.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This job involves varying degrees of physical demands, some sedentary, but others may require strenuous physical effort. All positions assigned to the Aquatics Section of the Recreation Department must be able to ensure public safety and participate in the rescue or retrieval of an individual from the pool or assist an individual suffering from a medical condition. There is no position available in this section where an employee can be assured that he or she will not have to become involved in strenuous physical activity in order save an individual's life. The employee in this position may be required to:

  • Frequently sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear.

  • Observe activity around the pool and in the pool continuously and for extended periods of time.

  • Physically struggle, restrain or otherwise subdue/restrain individuals in a state of distress with various abilities and strength and possess the strength or quickness to rescue endangered persons.

  • Frequently use hands, fingers, arms, legs and body, feel objects and manipulate them, operate tools and equipment effectively.

  • Use computers for word processing and data entry.

  • Occasionally reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste and smell.

  • Lift and/or move objects weighing 100 pounds or more, including the limp body of a person.

  • Meet a required level of proficiency with various testing processes used to establish standards for lifeguards and maintain a level of proficiency in such areas.

Employee must communicate clearly and effectively; must understand and be understood.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust their focus, allowing a broad field of vision. It is essential that the employee be physically able to operate a variety of computer and office equipment successfully in order to fulfill the essential functions of this position.

The noise level in the work environment is usually high and may range from moderate to extreme with consistent vibrations. The employee will consistently encounter fumes and odors, frequently encounter mists, and occasionally encounter dusts, smoke, gasses or poor ventilation. The employee will consistently work with hazards such as mechanical, electrical or burns, and frequent radiant energy. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places.

Full pay range is: $19.10/hr. - $24.20/hr.
