Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator, Cancer Registry, the Cancer Tumor Registrar is responsible for assisting with the documentation of all cancer cases diagnosed and/or treated at the hospital to generate date used for determining optimal care and treatment of cancer patients.

  • Records all appropriate patient and follow up information in regards to disease process.

  • Updates all research and/or registry patient files as required; assists with lifetime follow up.

  • Identifies all applicable cancer cases that meet eligibility.

  • Performs patient care evaluation studies as necessary.

  • Completes required continuing education hours.

  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.

  • Follows system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code, display of the ID badge and safety.

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Associate's degree in applied science or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.


  • Certified as Cancer Tumor Registrar.

Complexity of Work:

  • Knowledge of computer software systems and computer terminals essential. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Work Experience:

  • Two years Cancer Registry experience.

Responsible for obtaining, abstracting, correcting and entering appropriate patient data, both concurrently and retrospectively on trauma patients. Analyzes and interprets all available patient data to determine extensive coding classifications including ISS scores utilizing ICD-10 and AIS coding. In addition, responsible for compiling statistics, preparing reports, generating reports on trauma populations and performing data searches for trauma related research projects. Directly responsible for submitting data to the National, Regional and State of Ohio trauma data bases. Schedule: (4) 9 hour shifts a week. Mon-Friday. Flexible day shift hours. Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Associate's degree in Health Information Technology or previous experience with trauma registry/database systems is preferred. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills required. Detail oriented with the ability to organize/complete work under deadlines. A working knowledge of trauma, medical terminology and anatomy is required. Demonstrated proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel required. Familiarity with ICD-9 coding, AIS/ISS coding is preferred. Must be able to work independently. Within three years of employment, achievement of becoming either a Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry or a Certified Registered Health Information Technologist.
