The Ohio Department of Health supports a hybrid teleworking model. This position may work a hybrid schedule at the discretion of the manager or supervisor, which will require occasional attendance in the office for training, meetings and other operational needs. Employees must reside within a reasonable distance to their assigned headquarters for compliance with workplace reporting requirements.

Candidates must have ability to be in person at the ODH building at least one day/month as this is not 100% remote.

What You'll Do:

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH), Bureau of Health Improvement and Wellness (BHIW) is seeking an OHIO Cancer Registrar to receive & review cancer incidence data submitted to the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS). The candidate will perform quality assurance validation, contact cancer reporters, evaluates reported treatment for the types of cancer/tumors, stage of disease, sex, and age of patients.

Other Duties:

  • Interprets pathology reports, codes and follows-back to physicians for additional information.

  • Performs passive follow-back with physicians and hospitals.

  • Provides consultation to hospital-based cancer registries and other reporting sources.

  • Assists supervisor in development of policies, procedures, and computerized data processing programs to facilitate a database containing timely, complete, and accurate population-based data.

  • Maintains filing system containing data submission.

  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in operation of word processing equipment or personal computer using basic word processing techniques & data entry.

  • Completion of associates core program in Health Information Management;

  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in operation of word processing equipment or personal computer using basic word processing techniques & data entry.

  • Or

  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Job Skills: Health Administration

Technical: Clerical & Data Entry, Data Visualization

Professional: Attention to Detail, Confidentiality, Interpreting Data

Additional Qualifications:

Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Certified Tumor Registrar/Oncology Data Specialist

  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator

  • Associates or advanced degree in Health Information Management or other healthcare related field

  • Experience with cancer case abstraction

  • Experience in understanding and use of registry-specific technical materials (e.g., NAACCR, FORDS, AJCC Staging Manuals)

  • Experience working in a cancer registry

  • Experience working with cancer registry computer software

  • Coursework in Anatomy or Physiology

  • Experience providing technical assistance or training

  • Experience writing instructional/educational materials
