EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Provide first aid to ill and injured students; apply bandages and ice packs and take temperatures; perform basic procedures and testing in accordance with direction and training by district nurse; contact parents, district nurse or paramedics as appropriate; provide information and assistance to students with health concerns, including drug and alcohol use, pregnancy, eating disorders, and low self-esteem; refer students to psychologist, counselor or other specialists as appropriate; administer medications in accordance with established District guidelines; order, inventory and maintain health office supplies; prepare and maintain classroom and staff first aid kits; prepare and maintain student health records and emergency records; assure that students have appropriate immunizations and CHDP as required by the State; initiate exclusion proceedings as needed; schedule and assist with vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings, bloodborne pathogens training; communicate with parents regarding student illness, injuries and other health issues; prepare and distribute bulletins and notices regarding immunizations and exposure to communicable diseases; explain various State, District and County health rules, regulations and policies; prepare and submit various statistical reports as mandated by the District and the State; file and follow-up on accident reports; prepare logs, lists and files related to health care services provided; perform other duties within job family as assigned. KNOWLEDGE OF: First aid procedures; universal precautions; needs, problems and concerns of children and adolescent; oral and written communication skills, modern office methods, practices and equipment; operation of computers and other business machines; record-keeping methods; interpersonal skills including tact, courtesy and patience. ABILITY TO: Provide first aid to ill and injured students and staff; establish rapport with students; assess severity of health needs and take appropriate action; make referrals or report suicide threats, pregnancy, eating disorders, and substance abuse according to school and District guidelines; learn, apply and explain a variety of rules, regulations and District policies related to student health; maintain records and prepare reports; understand and follow oral and written directions; deal tactfully and courteously with the public; communicate effective and work cooperatively with others; operate computers and other office equipment.
