REPORTS TO: High School Principal

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Responsible for providing for a safe and secure school environment, fostering an optimal learning environment and promoting appropriate and safe behavior by patrolling the campus, monitoring student activity, enforcing school and district policies, intervening in physical encounters, monitoring security cameras, monitoring visitors, reporting unsafe or unhealthy conditions and assisting administrators and/or public officials with emergency or investigative situations. Position may require varying work hours and days including evenings and weekends.

This job reports directly to the High School Principal.

DUTIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Maintain the safety and security of the students and campus, foster a safe school culture and model/promote positive behaviors by providing high visibility and interaction throughout the school.

  • Walking and surveying hallways, common areas, grounds and parking lots

  • Positive intervention and conflict resolution during verbal and physical encounters among students.

  • Diffusing and de-escalating dangerous or hostile situations.

  • Enforcing safe school policies regarding weapons, drugs and illegal substances, bullying and harassment, traffic rules, dress code, proper conduct, etc.

  • Discuss and mediate problems with students.

  • Provide written incident reports to administrators and assist with disciplinary measures as necessary.

  • Report any and all unsafe conditions and potential health and safety hazards to administrators.

  • Monitor students during lunch and breaks inside and outside of building.

  • Monitor security cameras to oversee the safety and security of students, staff, visitors and school assets.

  • Assist and monitor visitors, checking for appropriate visitor passes. Escort unauthorized visitors off campus. Informs personnel, students, parents and/or visitors of school policies and procedures for the purpose of providing necessary information in compliance with policies and guidelines.

  • Collaborates with other school and district personnel, assigned police officer, representatives of local agencies, etc. for the purpose of providing information and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of the school site.

  • Maintains a variety of information, files and records (e.g. schedules, investigations, guidelines, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information for future reference and/or audit for compliance to established policies.

  • Provide security at sporting events and/or other extracurricular activities outside of school hours including weekends, evenings and occasional nights.

  • Assist administrators, staff, students and visitors during crisis situations including fire drills, emergency drills, weapons control, bomb threats, threats of violence and lockdowns.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Administering first aid; operating standard office equipment and using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of investigation; record keeping; pertinent codes, regulations and/or laws; and conflict and emergency management.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; working with detailed information/data; and serving in a leadership role of peers. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. RESPONSIBILITY

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with groups of elementary, middle and/or high school students

  • Job related experience is desired

  • CPR and First Aid Certification is desired

  • Non-Violent Crisis Prevention training and/or certification desired

CLEARANCES:

  • Criminal justice fingerprint/background check required for hire

  • Must successfully complete a pre-hire, post-offer physical examination

  • Substance Abuse Screening

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • CPR and First Aid certifications required within 1 year after entering position

  • Non-Violent Crisis Prevention training required within 1 year after entering position

TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • Common sense, problem solving, mediation skills, and mature attitude.

  • Ability to respond to hostile situations and intervene in physical altercations.

  • Ability to work with large groups of students, including students with special needs.

  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule to include evenings, nights and weekends.

  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies and building and department procedures.

  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ ADA REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently stand and walk, bend, stoop, and reach overhead.

  • Normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Physical agility to lift and move up to 25 pounds.

  • Verbal communications including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels.
