Campus Shuttle Driver (Part-Time, OPS)

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Florida's only public university exclusively teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is looking for exceptional candidates to serve as Campus Shuttle Drivers. This position is part-time, with an average of 14 hours per week. The Campus Shuttle Driver is responsible for safely operating state-owned University vehicles in compliance with traffic laws while transporting passengers. They drive and operate shuttles, buses, or vans to transport passengers around campus and neighboring counties, making necessary route adjustments based on traffic patterns. Providing excellent customer service, they assist passengers, resolve issues, and offer information. The driver ensures the cleanliness and safety of the vehicle, reporting any maintenance or performance issues promptly. They fuel and clean shuttle buses, maintain ridership data, and complete daily inspection reports. Additionally, they follow the written policy for reporting accidents or injuries and assist in training new drivers. Other assigned duties may also be performed.

JOB DESCRIPTION

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safely operates state-owned University vehicles while transporting passengers in accordance with all local, state, and federal traffic laws.

  • Drive and operate a shuttle, bus, or van to transport passengers around campus and throughout Polk County in a safe and courteous manner. On occasion, some routes may extend into neighboring counties.

  • Ability to assess traffic patterns and make route adjustments to facilitate bus service.

  • Provides customer service and information to passengers as necessary in a polite and friendly manner, which may include resolving customer issues.

  • Ensures the University vehicle is clean and in safe condition reporting any problems or vehicle performance or maintenance issues immediately.

  • Fuel and clean shuttle buses.

  • Keep statistical data on ridership and complete daily inspection reports.

  • Report any accidents or injuries according to the written policy.

  • Assists with the training of new employees for driving techniques.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • A thorough understanding of local, state, and federal traffic laws and regulations, and consistently adhering to safe driving practices while operating University vehicles.

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to provide courteous and friendly customer service, resolving passenger issues and helping as needed.

  • Time management skills to efficiently manage and adhere to established schedules and maintain punctuality in pick-up and drop-off times for passengers.

  • Detail-oriented and observant to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers, as well as identifying and reporting any potential safety hazards or irregularities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record

  • Have at least 2 years of driving experience or 5 years equivalent transportation or fleet management experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience driving a shuttle bus or equivalent.

  • Experience in transportation service and customer service.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • This position requires a criminal background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.

  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position is part-time, non-exempt/hourly. The normal work schedule will be determined at time of hire. Travel between local areas outside of campus is required. The position will be about 14 hours per week and will require afternoon and evening availability. Please review current shuttle schedule.

TARGET HIRING SALARY: $18-20/hour.
