Health Sciences Academic Services & Facilities (HSAS&F) has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary, Part-Time Campus Security Officer.

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide security to the Health Sciences Complex, which includes the Magnuson Health Sciences Center, the W. H. Foege Building, South Campus Center, and the ARCF. Health Sciences Security supports the University of Washington and Health Sciences Academic Services & Facilities (HSAS&F) mission and goals by providing a safe environment for research, instruction and patient care. This position reports to the Campus Security Sergeant of the Building Management & Security unit of Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities.

A successful candidate will work collaboratively with supervisors and team members to ensure that the complex security needs of the Health Sciences schools, upper campus departments and outside organizations are met in a proactive manner. The Security Officer will work in close partnership with other HSAS&F units, Custodial Services, UW Facilities, EH&S, CAAMS, ARCF occupants, UWPD and UWMC Public Safety to ensure the smooth and safe daily operation of the facility. The Security Officer must have a strong collaborative, customer-driven, and solution-oriented approach to balancing the needs of all units and personnel in Health Sciences. The Security Officer listens keenly and effectively while asking substantive questions regarding the needs of Health Sciences and its occupants.

Typical patrol duties include responding to service requests; responding to alarms; monitoring security camera video feeds; identifying and resolving building maintenance problems; performing physical security checks; and contacting and removing trespassers.

The Security Officer is expected to deliver excellent customer service while ensuring the safety of the building and its occupants. The Security Officer will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work well with, and be sensitive to, people from diverse backgrounds. Must be able to approach others in an assertive manner to de-escalate situations and counsel individuals in crisis. The Security Officer is expected to patrol the Health Sciences buildings and exterior grounds at all times when not performing other work-related duties.

Duties also include operation of security and access applications, completing activity logs and reports using the Omnigo application, communicating with supervisors and departmental administrators via email, and interpreting and applying rules and procedures. Officers will attend continuing education courses as required by regulations and at supervisor's request. Meet attendance expectations, to include minimal unplanned absences.

Perform related duties as required.

Requirements:

  • High School graduation or equivalent; possession of a valid driver's license; no previous felony convictions; AND two years of full-time college in police science or allied field; OR two years of police or campus security experience.

  • Must be able to patrol on foot through a typical eight-hour shift and climb ladders.

  • Must communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken English with supervisors, emergency services personnel, building occupants and other customers.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.

  • Strong computing skills, in order to operate security software such as Omnigo and PicturePerfect, respond to email messages using Outlook and create written documents using Microsoft Word.

  • After receiving training, must be able to safely operate a Segway transporter within buildings and on exterior grounds.

  • Work shift to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Desirable:

  • Prior experience with Omnigo, OnGuard and PicturePerfect security software.

  • Prior experience in the safe operation of Segway transporters within buildings.

Harborview Medical Center Hospital Security has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Campus Security Sergeant. In addition to duties listed below, the focus of this position is to help ensure a secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors that promote the healing and teaching mission of Harborview Medical Center. The Security Services team has a key role in maintaining a healing environment in a manner that is consistent with UW Medicine Patients Are First Service Culture guidelines. Security Sergeants provide assistance and problem resolution for patients, staff, and visitors. While modeling UW Medicine Service Culture guidelines, Security Sergeants ensure compliance with select policies and act as liaisons with the nursing supervisor(s), administrative personnel, law enforcement agencies and fire department agencies. Supervisors directly supervise Security Officers on all shifts; oversee work schedules and ensure adequate staffing; complete performance evaluations annually for all assigned personnel; and evaluate performance of officers to determine the need for training. This position conducts shift briefings on relevant events and current memos; responds to calls for service and to "code" calls throughout the campus as dispatched; reviews all reports submitted by security officers for compliance and departmental regulations; and responds to complaints of disturbance and stolen property from patients, staff, or visitors. Supervisors prepare reports regarding incidents, hazards, property damage and fire and other alarms; may maintain the campus lost and found log including the area where items are maintained; maintain computer-generated and/or handwritten logs as applicable; and review and correct all reports. This position interacts with the public, responding to requests for general advice and direction. Supervisors administer first aid and respond to calls for emergency aid if needed.
