Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
The Virginia Peninsula Community College Department of Police, Safety, and Security protects the College faculty, staff, students, visitors, and property by providing Security and related services, by promoting community involvement, and excellent customer services while supporting the College's mission. We maintain a safe and secure environment for all the college community and ensure the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the rules and regulations of the college are upheld.
Job Description: Please describe the duties and
purpose of the position.
This position's main function is to serve as a campus security officer (CSO) responsible for upholding and supporting a safe and secure environment at all Virginia Peninsula Community College Locations. The CSO will patrol college buildings and grounds in an atmosphere conducive to a college environment. The officer will remain alert to emergency situations, provide a first-line response, and provide escort services, and other public aid services as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be a U.S. citizen.
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
Possess a valid Virginia operator's license.
Successful completion of the Department of Criminal Justice Campus Security Officer Course within 180 days (about 6 months) of hiring; active accreditation throughout employment.
Complete CPR/First Aid and AED Certification within 90 days (about 3 months) of hiring; active accreditation throughout employment.
Complete Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Independent Studies ICS 100 Introduction to Incident Command within 30 days (about 4 and a half weeks) of hiring.
Ability to successfully complete Commonwealth of Virginia accredited Blood Borne Pathogens class within 30 days (about 4 and a half weeks) of hiring; active renewal throughout employment.
Work at all campus locations.
Knowledge:
Knowledgeable of safety and security concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
Working knowledge of customer service practices and principles.
Knowledge of security "best practices" and OSHA standards.
Skills:
Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer services orientated.
Demonstrated skills in security vehicles, Golf Carts, communication equipment, alarm systems, and other types of security equipment.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to:
Successfully conduct security patrols without supervision.
Complete routine paperwork.
Follow and give oral and written instructions.
Meet physical demands of the position, to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations. Understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures.
Detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
Obtain and maintain certification as a campus security officer as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
Perform foot patrol on any campus location.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a college setting.
Law Enforcement/Security experience in a public service community or policing oriented organization.
Previous experience or training in public safety operations.
