The Campus Safety Officer provides personnel, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students and visitors at all Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) properties and locations. Protecting them from vandalism, theft, destruction, and other adverse conditions.

Ensures all buildings, offices, and sensitive areas are locked.

Ability to handle difficult situations when they arise.

Ability to communicate with local authorities to report any suspicious activity on (SLCC) properties. Works with law enforcement to ensure safety in the various parking areas.

This function/position has been designated as "essential", which means that when the College is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at the College.

This position is required to work various shifts including days, swings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

This is an un-armed position.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provides personnel security for faculty, staff, students and visitors at all SLCC properties and locations.

  • Maintains security of buildings, facilities, equipment, etc., and protects them from vandalism, theft, destruction, and other adverse conditions.

  • Observes physical hazards or potential hazards and takes the appropriate steps to report items to the various divisions.

  • Serves as the point of contact for Facilities for snow removal or other adverse conditions.

  • Observes, informs and serves as a witness for law enforcement officers investigating a crime.

  • Reports injuries which occur on campus, campus rules and regulations violations.

  • Responds to non-police calls such as unlocking doors for instructors and assisting with problems.

  • Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty as necessary.

  • Provides other services such as lockouts and jumpstarts for vehicles.

  • Assists parking services after hours for boot removal.

  • Maintains data (logs) and prepares security reports.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent.

  • One (1) year paid, full-time, work experience.

  • Able to obtain employment in the USA without VISA sponsorship.

  • Successfully pass a background check.

  • Obtain and maintain a Utah driver's license.

  • Reliable transportation to/from various campuses during all hours.

  • Ability to work the day shifts, swing shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a security setting preferred.

Experience in customer service.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to handle difficult situations when they arise.

  • Ability to communicate with local authorities to report any suspicious activity on SLCC properties.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with all SLCC faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

  • Skilled in providing protection services to individuals on campus.

  • Contribute to discussions on public safety-related programs, procedures, and policies.

  • Observe, inform, and serve as a witness for law enforcement officers investigating a crime.

  • Observe, locate, identify, and report any hazardous conditions on campus.

  • Make appropriate decisions in stressful situations.

  • Work without supervision.

  • Strong and effective interpersonal communication skills, flexible, and customer service oriented.

  • Ability to work in various environments such as cold weather, snow, rain, or heat.

  • Operate computer equipment and basic software packages.

  • Basic knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and codes defined by the United States, Utah, and Salt Lake County. Security tactics and procedures. College policies and procedures.

  • Skilled in radio and cellular phone communications to contact the appropriate agencies.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
