Location: Lisle Campus

Position Summary: This position will be responsible for providing safety, security and protection of persons, buildings and/or property within the University.

You will be greeting incoming guests to the Campus Safety Department, answering phone calls, completing reports, monitoring radio's, and communicating via the radio to other officers on campus. You will be responsible for entering data into our reporting system, monitoring alarm and weather tracking systems, operate the Student I.D. computer system, conduct traffic control, parking enforcement, safety patrols, answering calls for service and properly documenting them. You are expected to report for work fit for duty, which means able to perform your job in a safe, appropriate, and effective manner.

The CSO must be available to work on weekdays and weekends on an "as needed" basis (a combination of 8 hour and 12-hour day and night shifts). The CSO with be expected to become certified/trained in CPR, First Aid and Narcan.

Essential Job Responsibilities: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. 1.The CSO works under the general supervision of an Assistant or Associate Director. Is familiar with the work routine and proper policy and procedures within the department and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments. Refers to supervisor for clarification, interpretation, and direction for new assignments; reviews work to remain aware of progress, work methods, and technical accuracy.

2.Provide security to the University Community by enforcing University Policies, securing assigned buildings and frequent campus patrols. Investigate any observed or reported suspicious activity.

Be approachable and responsive to requests. Provide basic information and directions to students, faculty, staff, and guests of the University. Monitor and provide guidance to student workers to ensure they are successful.

3.Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness, cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectful University Community. When interacting with staff, faculty, students, and guests of the University demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior. Engage in educational opportunities and required training to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

4.Provide safety escorts to students, faculty, staff, and guests when requested. Actively patrol campus on foot, bicycle, golf cart or vehicle. Assist students, faculty, and staff with access to buildings or residence hall rooms as needed and approved.

5.Maintain key control and access to secure or restricted areas. Monitor key card access to buildings on campus.

Attend campus safety related training courses, classes and seminars as needed. Provide safety presentations when requested by faculty or staff. Other investigative or special projects assigned by the Director of Campus Safety.

Provide vehicle jumpstarts or unlocks to community members. Provide traffic control at events on campus or during emergencies.

6.Respond to campus incidents such as burglar/panic alarms, fire alarms, trouble alarms, disputes between students, violations of University Policy, medical and other emergencies. In times of medical emergencies provide emergency first aid or CPR where appropriate and assist in the transportation of persons when necessary.

Coordinate with Lisle Police and Lisle/Woodridge Fire Department, Residence Life in responding to emergencies. Responsible for activating the Universities emergency broadcast system for weather and active threat events.

7.Violations of Code of Conduct will be promptly, accurately, and thoroughly documented. Complete all necessary forms, including tickets and reports, provide accurate information of involved persons and witnesses.

Enforce University parking rules and regulations and issue campus citations when necessary.

Complete a daily summary at the end of your shift.

Other Functions:

  • Maintain a positive working relationship with campus personnel and local first responders.

  • Clean and fuel department vehicles.

  • Annual involvement in the development and implementation of programs designed to interact with students.

Working Conditions: Outdoors in all weather conditions. Some general office work.

Required Qualifications:

Education: High School Graduate/GED Required, Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience: Customer service experience preferred.

Law enforcement experience preferred. Higher Education experience preferred.

Specific Skills: Ability to speak clearly and be understood via radio and phone communication.

Ability to read, understand and apply both written and verbal directives. Normal hearing, due to the heavy volume of telephone and radio communication, audible alarms, and duties requiring monitoring of police/fire/EMS radio traffic. Strong command of the English language.

Ability to maintain calm and professional demeanor during stressful or critical situations. Ability to communicate department/University policies and procedures in a professional manner. Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office products.

Comfortable with technical equipment to include, radios, scanners, electronic access control, fire panels and PC based programs. Ability to work varying shifts, as required to meet departmental requirements.

Specific Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications: Yes, Valid Illinois Driver's License.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to drive a vehicle for extended amounts of time without interruption (intervals up to 3-4 hours).

Possess visual acuity.

Good physical condition without any restriction in the ability to walk, run, stand or climb multiple flights of stairs.

Ability to sit for an extended amount of time (intervals more than 60 minutes).

Ability to perform extended foot patrols multiple times during a shift (intervals more than 30 minutes).

Ability to give pursuit of offender on foot.

Ability to reach, grasp, finger strength and manipulation to operate firearms.

Strong or power grasps of evidence, property, suspects; tight grasp, wrist, and arm movement.

Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds (floor to waist, waist to floor, floor to chest); continuous transporting (pull) up to 30 lbs.; lifting of items weighing from 11 to over 100 lbs. below and at waist level, either with or without assistance; transporting (Pull) items weighing 26 - 50 lbs. for distances up to 50 yards without assistance; Working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Be able to go from standing to kneeling on both knees, lie down, get up to knees and stand up) Officer do not crawl often, more getting down on knees and back to feet.

Fast walking speed, apprehension, and pursuit simulation of suspect.

Ability to react and work calmly under pressure.

24/7 Operation, combination of 8 hour and 12-hour shifts.

Training: As a University employee you are required to complete all University-specific and/or OSHA related training to fulfill your job duties.

Specific training will be conducted online or in person. Employees must complete all trainings required by Benedictine University.
