Position Summary

Position open until filled / First Review of materials will begin: Monday April 17th, 2024

Salary range for this position is: $48,924/yr - $65,700/yr (depending on experience)

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. The employer will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Work Schedule: This position is typically scheduled to work Tuesday- Saturday. The schedule may vary depending on program needs. May be required to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Under the supervision of the Director of Safety and Security, the Campus Security Officer will perform general duty security work to protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, and prevent and investigate crime; respond and focus on emergency preparedness efforts.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE

What you will be working on:

  • Patrol designated areas at Seattle Central College and/or Wood Technology Center, Seattle Maritime Academy by foot, bicycle, or car to enforce laws pertaining to local, state, federal statutes, city ordinances, colleges rules and regulations

  • Assist city or county police and state patrol in cases of emergency

  • Respond to calls for assistance and work closely with police officers, firefighters, and senior management

  • Direct and regulate traffic, investigate accidents/crimes, and gather evidence and issue citations for violations

  • Administer first aid if necessary

  • Locate witnesses and appear in court as required

  • Operate department office equipment to include computer, phone, and communication equipment to contact department and other officers

  • Receive and document reports of criminal activity using computer-based reporting system

  • Dispatch foot patrol units and monitor alarm systems

  • As directed, and with other officers, support the Director of Security in:

  • Assisting with organizing and presenting predetermined emergency preparedness training to staff, faculty, and students that covers fire emergencies, active shooter/lockdowns, shelter-in-place, and earthquakes

  • Participating in tabletop drills led by the Campus Safety and Security Director

  • Coordinating emergency drills and working with campus departments to ensure they are prepared

  • Ensuring emergency supplies are stocked and that emergency water is fresh

  • Conducting crime prevention training for students and employees.

  • Conducting monthly inspects and maintain inspection records of all Automated Emergency Defibrillators (AEDs), replacing batteries and pads as needed

  • Conducting frequent daily perimeter security audits to ensure doors are functioning properly and report irregularities to the Facilities and Plant Operations Department

  • Assisting Director with updating emergency plans and emergency preparedness signage and brochures

  • Assisting Director with coordination of volunteer emergency communications program (ham radio) within college and network with outside radio groups

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Two or more years of full-time experience working as a Campus Police officer or Campus Security Officer in a K-12 or higher education environment.

  • Completed a campus security or state certified law enforcement training academy (reserve or full-time) OR have an Associates degree (or higher) in Criminal Justice.

  • Possess the ability to administer first aid/CPR and become first aid/CPR certified within the first six months of employment. Emergency Medical Responder training is preferred.

  • Currently certified in the use of OC (pepper) spray and baton (straight or side-handle).

  • Possess a valid Washington state driver's license and be able to drive between different campus facilities

  • Possess the ability to complete FEMA IS-100 and IS-700.

  • Familiarity with the incident command system and the mechanics of organizing and implementing tabletop emergency management exercises.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 50 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for up to 4 hours, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.

  • Ability to patrol campus on foot for several hours per day.

  • Ability to stand at one location for up to one hour.
