Job Description:

BASIC PURPOSE: Works collaboratively with the Director of Campus Ministry, other members of the Campus Ministry staff and members of the University Pastoral Ministry Team to support students in their spiritual development and faith formation, to evangelize among students, and to offer students pastoral care and spiritual direction.

ACCOUNTABILITIES: The Campus Minister will participate in the following ministerial activities and, depending on education and experience, will direct some of the following ministerial activities:

  • Develops relationships with students through presence at Campus Ministry and other University activities, and maintains visibility in the Campus Ministry Center, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, and places on campus where students gather.

  • Provides opportunities for the spiritual development and faith formation of students (e.g., Bible study, Christian Initiation catechesis, retreats).

  • Accompanies students on week-long service/immersion trips and other off-campus travel related to Campus Ministry (e.g., March for Life, retreats).

  • Promote and participate in the liturgical life of the University community.

  • Maintains a particular pastoral focus on female students and students in the ALANA (African-, Latin-, Asian- and Native-American) community.

  • Participates in hospitality events with students in the Campus Ministry Center (e.g., First Thursday Bagels, Dinner in the Company of Friends, Food After Mass, receptions after Sunday Mass) and in other spaces on campus (e.g., Agape Latte, Theology on Tap).

  • Serves as the chaplain to some athletic teams, with a particular focus on women's teams.

  • Offers outreach to Catholic students, students of other religious traditions, and students with no religious affiliation. Collaborates with staff, faculty and ministers in the Worcester area from various religious traditions.

  • Participates in weekly Campus Ministry meetings, occasional meetings with the University Pastoral Ministry Team, and programs with colleagues in other departments.

  • Serves, as needed, on University committees, task forces and interview teams.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Practicing Catholic with strong personal faith life who is committed to the Catholic and Assumptionist identity and educational mission of Assumption University.

  • Masters Degree in Theology or Ministry.

  • Enthusiasm for working with, and ease in relating to, undergraduate students.

  • Commitment to working collaboratively with an ecumenical team of colleagues and student leaders.

  • Commitment to supporting Catholic students and students from other faith traditions in their spiritual growth and faith formation.

  • Commitment to continuing ministerial development and spiritual formation.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.

  • Ability to work a non-traditional schedule including some evenings and weekends.

Requirements:

SCOPE:

  • Interacts on a daily basis with students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni/ae of the University, and, on an occasional basis, with people from the wider Worcester community including those who worship on campus.

  • Interacts on a daily basis with a Campus Ministry staff that is directed by a Catholic deacon and includes an Assumptionist priest, a Catholic lay minister, an InterVarsity Christian Fellowship representative, a graduate assistant and an administrative assistant. Interacts on an occasional basis with other adjunct ministers who serve on the University Pastoral Ministry Team which includes Assumptionist priests, a Religious of the Assumption Sister, and other members of the University faculty/staff.

  • Ten month position runs from August 1 to May 31.

  • Incumbent may be considered for a Minister in Residence position on campus, which includes free simple housing (apartment with private bathroom and small kitchen) in a student residence hall in return for pastoral ministry in one of the University's residential areas.
