Peer mentors support the transition of students to SLCC, specifically first-generation, undocumented, transitioning-out-of-foster care, nontraditional students, and student who need help who are involved in the Bruin Scholars cohort, a program designed for students to have a smooth transition and support system in college.

Peer Mentors participate in various activities throughout the school year.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Participate as a team member of the Orientation & Student Success (OSS) Office by:

  • Continuous follow-up with students in the Bruin Scholars program to assist them in locating needed resources.

  • Researching and creating activities to encourage learning and involvement in SLCC

  • Assisting in recruitment efforts for the Bruin Scholars program

  • Being familiar with SLCC enrollment and registration process.

  • Being able to articulate the purpose of SLCC's general education classes and teach new students how to register for classes.

  • Being familiar with Banner to locate needed information and assist the office with Orientation enrollment and holds.

  • Participating in event planning and execution.

  • The ability to motivate and excite new students.

  • Creating a welcoming environment for new students.

  • Assisting OSS and other departments in outreach activities for new students.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA

  • Registered for 9.0 credit for Fall and Spring semesters

  • Registered for 6.0 credit hours for summer semester

  • Participate in Campus Internship Program professional development activities

Maintain 15-20 hours per week work schedule

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will go to candidates who are:

  • Bilingual

  • Demonstrate strong public speaking skills

  • Professional in manner and appearance

  • A current and active Bruin Scholar

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Peer Mentors must:

  • Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of diverse individuals.

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills, cultural competencies, and sensibilities.

  • Work collaboratively with other office staff, a variety of campus departments and community personnel.

  • Gather, process, and organize large amounts of information accurately.

  • Utilize basic computer operating systems and SLCC's computer systems (Banner, DegreeWorks).

  • Demonstrate professionalism.

  • Knowledge of HB 144 and other Undocumented Student resources.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties Special Instructions

Part-time, approximately 10-20 hours per week.

Schedule is negotiable, between hours of 8:00am - 4:30pm
