The Calendar Editor must become familiar with the rich cultural life of the Sacramento regionthe venues and institutions presenting arts and entertainment eventsand bring their weekly offerings to the attention of our readers and online users. The primary responsibility is creating a complete and accurate calendar of events and nightlife grid in the printed Sacramento News & Review as well as for helping improve, expand and develop the online calendar. This requires reviewing the accuracy of calendar submissions and highlighting the cream of the crop. This editor is responsible for entering listings information into the SN&R online database and expanding upon that information. This editor may be called on to help supervise editorial interns. This editor will connect via phone and email with venues to encourage them to enter information into our online calendar or to establish alternate methods of gathering event information from them. This editor will review SN&R ads for event information and ensure its inclusion in the online and print calendars, as space allows and content merits. Candidates for this position are expected to be both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the local, regional and national arts scene and must be able to write arts-related picks for the calendar section as needed.

20 hours per week. Specific scheduled to be assigned by the Editor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviewing, gathering, organizing and entering information into SN&R's arts and entertainment online database for the weekly print calendar section of the paper

  • Reviewing all event listings that come in from the public and determining which one merits print publication

  • Reviewing the online event queue of events posted by the public to delete any inappropriate content

  • Writing all print event listings in an accurate, professional, interesting way

  • In consultation with the Editor and Managing Editor, selecting events to highlight as "event picks of the week", and writing preview copy about them, within firm deadline constraints

  • Assisting, when needed, with proofreading and making galley corrections

  • Working with the production department to ensure that the calendar is designed in a visually interesting way. This includes providing photos and other graphics after obtaining permissions

  • Dealing politely and effectively with event venues, the SN&R team, and the public to foster good communication and to gather information for events listings

  • Representing the News & Review at public events, radio or TV appearances, as applicable

  • Meeting deadlines as set by the Editor and Design Manager

  • Other duties, as assigned


  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Past experience with database entry. Ability to read, analyze, and conduct data entry quickly, and accurately.

  • Good writing skills and understanding of alternative newspaper coverage.

  • Passion for local arts and culture (food, music, galleries, clubs, etc.)

  • Familiarity with Libre Office and Adobe InDesign.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with venue owners and employees, event promoters, SN&R sales team.

  • Ability to interact with the public in a professional manner and to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.

  • Time management skills and ability to multitask and work within deadlines

Published weekly since 1989, the award winning Sacramento News & Review provides a lively mixture of news, features, commentary, arts and a calendar of events. Our alt weekly reflects our work environment: decidedly NOT corporate, yet an effective foundation of passion and professionalism topped off with an edgy but laid-back attitude. Candidates must have the proven ability to deliver a fresh, innovative publication to readers through management of editorial staff and freelancers. An aptitude for news and a flair for motivating writers to produce stylish and compelling magazine-length stories required. This is a managerial position, supervising all Sacramento editors, copyeditors, proofreaders and staff reporters. The Editor oversees the scope and subject matter of all editorial content in the newspaper. The Editor ensures that all content is factually accurate, and does not conflict with legal guidelines including libel and invasion-of-privacy laws. Works with Art Director to coordinate design of the newspaper. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. The Editor will also work with the CEO to seek out new funding opportunities for the paper and for potential additional reporters. The position is based in Sacramento. Hours: Typically 40 hrs/week Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Develop editorial vision, strategy, plans, and implement innovations, with the goals of improving the editorial quality and impact and increasing readership * Manage editorial processes to maintain and improve overall efficiency and productivity * Keep editorial expenses within budget * Set high standards of quality and improve the writing and editing skills of editorial staff * Ensure that there are no errors in spelling, punctuation, syntax or style in the editorial content of the newspaper; or supervise others who do this work * Assign and edit the feature-length story and oversee the planning, assigning and editing of the stories in the News and Culture Sections * Manage and develop staff to ensure a high quality product * Identify and pursue ways that the News & Review can increase community outreach * Identify and pursue ways that the News & Review can use its role to create positive change within our communities * Work with Art Director to coordinate design of newspaper * Work with Production Manager to coordinate deadlines and schedules, and resolve problems * Assist publisher in efforts to find non-traditional sources of funding for journalism, by creating and presenting proposals and explaining the firewall between funding and reporting Supervisory Responsibilities: This position supervises all Sacramento editors, copyeditors, proofreaders and staff reporters. Knowledge and Abilities * Affinity for the unique role of our paper in the community * Solid journalism background – strong understanding of libel and privacy law and journalistic ethics * Strong relationship building skills – ability to effectively manage staff and develop their skills; ability to partner with management and focus on common goals * Expert editing skills including ability to formulate stories, develop a diverse freelance team, coach writers and work with a variety of voices Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Four years of writing for a publication and two years of editing experience required. Two years of alternative newspaper experience required.
