The Calendar Editor must become familiar with the rich cultural life of the Sacramento regionthe venues and institutions presenting arts and entertainment eventsand bring their weekly offerings to the attention of our readers and online users. The primary responsibility is creating a complete and accurate calendar of events and nightlife grid in the printed Sacramento News & Review as well as for helping improve, expand and develop the online newsreview.com calendar. This requires reviewing the accuracy of calendar submissions and highlighting the cream of the crop. This editor is responsible for entering listings information into the SN&R online database and expanding upon that information. This editor may be called on to help supervise editorial interns. This editor will connect via phone and email with venues to encourage them to enter information into our online calendar or to establish alternate methods of gathering event information from them. This editor will review SN&R ads for event information and ensure its inclusion in the online and print calendars, as space allows and content merits. Candidates for this position are expected to be both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the local, regional and national arts scene and must be able to write arts-related picks for the calendar section as needed.

Hours:
20 hours per week. Specific scheduled to be assigned by the Editor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviewing, gathering, organizing and entering information into SN&R's arts and entertainment online database for the weekly print calendar section of the paper

  • Reviewing all event listings that come in from the public and determining which one merits print publication

  • Reviewing the online event queue of events posted by the public to delete any inappropriate content

  • Writing all print event listings in an accurate, professional, interesting way

  • In consultation with the Editor and Managing Editor, selecting events to highlight as "event picks of the week", and writing preview copy about them, within firm deadline constraints

  • Assisting, when needed, with proofreading and making galley corrections

  • Working with the production department to ensure that the calendar is designed in a visually interesting way. This includes providing photos and other graphics after obtaining permissions

  • Dealing politely and effectively with event venues, the SN&R team, and the public to foster good communication and to gather information for events listings

  • Representing the News & Review at public events, radio or TV appearances, as applicable

  • Meeting deadlines as set by the Editor and Design Manager

  • Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Past experience with database entry. Ability to read, analyze, and conduct data entry quickly, and accurately.

  • Good writing skills and understanding of alternative newspaper coverage.

  • Passion for local arts and culture (food, music, galleries, clubs, etc.)

  • Familiarity with Libre Office and Adobe InDesign.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with venue owners and employees, event promoters, SN&R sales team.

  • Ability to interact with the public in a professional manner and to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.

  • Time management skills and ability to multitask and work within deadlines

You and your team will be responsible for helping our local journalism grow and thrive by providing expertise, leadership and coaching in key areas such as audience building, loyalty and engagement tactics, social media, newsletters and distribution tactics. The successful candidate will have expertise in engagement on social media platforms, a tremendous awareness of where potential audiences are going for local information, demonstrated success in growing newsletters and/or additional news-related products, and additional content distribution skills. This role requires an editor with strong management skills and a background in digital storytelling. The editor will coach and train reporters and a team of digital growth producers; provide guidance on story format, audience and visuals; help create plans for presentation and distribution; offer post-publication feedback; and hold the team and reporters accountable for growing loyal audiences. The West Region Growth Editor will work closely with and report to the West Region Editor on strategy and tactics to grow audiences and build loyalty around our journalism. Other key responsibilities: * Act as a daily point of contact for editors who need help with headlines, content packaging, social media strategy, etc. This includes: * Monitoring Facebook for engagement opportunities and follow-ups; alert local teams to those opportunities * Collaborating with newsrooms on promotional planning of reporting projects via slack and other communications tools * Discussing ways to improve with reporters who are struggling to meet pageview goals or about whom the editors are concerned for other reasons. This includes offering training/feedback opportunities for those reporters, and others, on better headline writing, better SEO, etc. * Train newsrooms on how to regularly listen to and engage with our audiences, including finding ways to encourage community participation in our journalism via crowdsourcing, etc., to elevate our coverage. * Assist newsrooms in growing audience for their editorial products, including newsletters and podcasts * Implement engagement strategies that focus on initiating conversations and building one-on-one relationships * Regularly analyze performance data to improve growth strategies * Assist our SEO experts in identifying topics for evergreen search and social traffic * Work with McClatchy leadership and local newsrooms to identify new audiences * Experiment with and implement strategies that increase reader loyalty: for example, podcasts, A/B testing of headlines, optimizing archive content Qualifications: * 5+ years of experience, preferably in a digital media organization * Reliable news judgment * Experience in a leadership role * A proven track record of growing and engaging audiences * Fluent in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google and other platforms * A deep understanding of social media best practices * A way with headlines and an understanding of what works on different platforms * An ability to work collaboratively on projects ranging from podcasts to video to enterprise stories.
