Salary Information

The salary for this position is negotiated through a collective bargaining agreement. All new employees will be hired at the minimum salary in the range and will be eligible for merit increases until reaching the maximum salary in the range.

Starting Annual Cadet Salary:

$43,769.97

6 months after start of employment (4% merit increase):

$45,520.77

12 months after start of employment (4% merit increase):

$47,341.60

24 months after start of employment (4% merit increase):

$49,235.26

  • The above figures do not include future Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), Public Employee Retirement System (NVPERS), or collective bargaining agreement changes.

DEFINITION

Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the Cadet Academy and performs entry level work of routine difficulty in the Patrol and Detention Services Divisions of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions

Training, Education and Experience

  • No experience is required.
  • Possess a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Possess a valid Nevada driverlicenseat time of appointment.
  • Be at least 18 years of age and cannot have reached his/her 20th birthday by the date of the first test instrument.

Special To This Classification

Since appointment to Cadet culminates in placement in the LVMPD Police or Corrections Academy, Cadet candidates must:

  • Be a citizen/naturalized citizen or permanent resident alien without conditions on status of the United States of America by the date of the first test instrument.
  • Not be prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to any law, including NRS 202.360 or 18 U.S. Code § 921-922.
  • Must meet all minimum standards for appointment to perform duties of a peace officer under NAC 289.110.

Conditions of Employment

In addition to the General Conditions of Employment, found here,the following specific conditions of employment and physical conditions apply to this position.

  • Personal Appearance: While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patchesexcept for hands, neck, head, or face tattoos. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.

  • Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.

  • Maintain physical fitness to meet all required physical standards for Cadet throughout the duration of the academy.

  • Obey the laws of the State of Nevada, the County of Clark, and the City of Las Vegas.

  • Successfully complete Cadet academy training.

  • Wear a uniform and maintain a neat and clean appearance.

  • Purchase their own equipment required for this position.

  • Purchase a vest upon graduation from academy.

  • Participate in the Department's random drug screening process.

  • Maintain a valid Nevada driver license.

  • Upon academy graduation, work anyhours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, as assigned and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements, if necessary, for effective operations of a 24/7 facility.

  • Qualify under Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to work in a detention facility.

  • Comply with NRS 617.454, NRS 617.455, and NAC 441A.370, including undergoing, within 14 days upon transfer to a corrections facility, an annual tuberculosis testing/screening, and every 12 months thereafter. Individuals who are past positive testers are required to provide medical documentation of testing/treatment records.

  • All physical and mental conditions sufficient to meet all standards required for successful completion of the entire Cadet academy training, including engaging in defensive tactics.

  • Vision sufficient to read the computer screen, as well as fine print in documents.

  • Hearing sufficient to hear, discriminate, localize, and respond accordingly to a variety of speech and environmental sounds in a variety of situations, including face-to-face communications, telephone conversations, or radio communications, in accordance with Department standards.

  • Dexterity and mobility sufficient to perform the following: operate standard police and office equipment; operate motorized vehicles; climb stairs; sprint from one location to another during code response and run for an extended period of time.

  • Agility sufficient to twist, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach forward, jump, and reach overhead.

  • Strength sufficient to subdue and restrain resistant persons and drag, lift, or carry persons or objects.

  • Endurance sufficient to perform the following: sit at personal computer terminals or in a vehicle for extended periods of time; stand and move around while working indoors or outdoors; wear a mask or other protection equipment for extended periods of time.

  • Alertness sufficient to be aware of surroundings at all times.

Due to security reasons, personal belongings permitted in the testing facility will be limited. Items such as large backpacks, briefcases, duffle bags or similar items may not be allowed. Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees administering the examination and may be subject to a search.

Additional Selection Processes

If you successfully complete the above selection process, you will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph exam. A polygraph examination can be stressful and may affect existing medical or psychological conditions or ongoing treatment.
