Job Description: We are looking for a full time CAD/CAM Die Designer for our Lafayette Operations group of North American (NA) Extrusions in Lafayette, Indiana. The individual in this role is responsible for evaluating customer requests, completing designs and programming machines for the manufacture of tooling used in the hard alloy extrusion process and evaluating tooling performance in the field. The principle challenge of this position is to complete models/drawings that accurately represent customer dimensional requirements, to accurately complete effective and efficient tooling designs and tooling manufacturing programs, and to continuously improve the tooling design processes. The incumbent will be responsible for designing dies used on direct and indirect extrusion presses from 900 tons to 14,000 tons and in the programming of die fabrication CNC's.

Reporting directly to the Tooling & Die Design Manager, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Operating CAD design software (Unigraphics) as required based on input from the Tool & Die Design Supervisor and the Process Technologists

  • Completing section drawings, detail drawings, and designs for the manufacture and use of tools and dies using individual expertise and computer-aided tools

  • Operating CAM software and complete CAM program for Numerically Controlled Machines for the manufacture of extrusion dies and tools

  • Calculating die openings, bearings, tapers, and tool support for basic regular extrusion dies as well as port-hole dies, hollow dies, and tube dies. Completing and maintaining documentation for all designs

Qualifications

  • Basic qualifications: Associates degree in Machine Tool, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering Technology or Computer Integrated Manufacturing Technology Minimum of 2 years experience in die design and fabrication Preferred qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or Engineering Technology 5+ years of tooling design, fabrication and implementation experience Aluminum industry experience Demonstrated problem solving skills and high attention to detail Experience in CAD/CAM systems operation (preferably Unigraphics or Solidworks) and/or machining
