  • General Summary/Overview:

The Assistant Medical Director BWPO, MD Wellness is a physician leader and manager on the BWPO Medical Management Team. Working as an active member of the Medical Management Leadership Team, comprised of BWPO Chief Medical Officer, Associate and Assistant Medical Directors, and Administrative Directors, the Assistant Medical Director actively participates in the advancement and development of MD Wellness/Professional Development strategy and programs. S/he provides relevant clinical context, active strategic thinking, and day-to-day management support to other Medical Management Team staff members working on not only MD Wellness/Professional Development, but also clinical care redesign and population health management. As a member of the leadership team, s/he enable the team to drive quality, efficiency, and strategy. Core leadership competencies include teamwork, executing to drive results, communicating effectively, coaching and mentoring, thinking strategically, networking and influencing, and leadership.

Under the direction of the BWPO Chief Medical Officer, the Assistant Medical Director BWPO, MD Wellness leads the development of the strategy and the management of all aspects of programs/projects within his/her portfolio. These responsibilities include the design of the strategy in alignment with broader PO, hospital and/or Partners strategy; oversight of the project execution to ensure goals, timelines, and budgets are met; management of the individual team members and overall team; and effective communication of the status of this work to her/his direct supervisor, the BWPO Chief Medical Officer, full Medical Management team and other key stakeholders.

S/he will have the ability and expectation to directly and indirectly manage within a matrixed organization staff, either with team members who have a direct HR reporting relationship and/or may work directly on his/her initiatives, but have a separate direct HR reporting relationship. Direct management responsibilities include: completing the annual performance review, reviewing the annual Competency Model development plan, and managing requests for time off and other administrative issues related to managing an employee. Indirect management responsibilities include contributing to the annual performance review, offering real-time coaching and feedback, and coordination with a team members' direct leader.

Specific Programs/Projects:

  • Faculty Wellness/Professional Fulfillment: Design and implement clinical and operational strategies to advance faculty wellness and overall professional fulfillment. Work across Brigham Health to design programs to advance faculty and trainee wellness across departments, and with individual department wellness champions to support advancement of local department efforts

  • Collaborate with PHS Wellness Leaders to share learning and leverage system resources to support wellness. Collaborate nationally to advance learning and strategy for MD wellness, including representing BH on Physician Wellness Academic Consortium.

  • Faculty Professional Development: Oversee/support programs designed to advance faculty professional development and advancement. Includes oversight of FACTS database, recognition awards and grant programs.

  • Other Programs/Projects as defined by Medical Management leadership: Work collaboratively with other medical directors to advance clinical care redesign/population health as part of medical management team.

Skill and Abilities Required:

  • Requires skills and experience facilitating clinical teams, managing administrative staff, and understanding group dynamics.

  • Experience engaging and communicating with physicians in process improvement and strategic projects.

  • Experience and demonstrated interest in advancing wellness and professional development efforts.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills, to communicate effectively with a wide range of departments and individuals at all levels throughout the organization.

  • Experience using a variety of improvement and redesign tools and techniques such as process mapping, root cause analysis, design and prototyping, rapid cycle testing and change management.

  • Extensive experience working with administrative healthcare and clinical data preferred.

  • Skill in use of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Qualifications:

  • MD with board certification with at least 3 years of practice experience.

  • Extensive management experience in an academic medical center or additional management degree (e.g., MBA, MPH) preferred.

  • Track record in completing process redesign, quality improvement, and project management work.

  • Effective facilitation skills within large dynamic groups required; with specific preference for experience facilitating physicians and clinical teams in performance improvement and/or behavior change

  • Demonstrated expertise in managing and communicating among working relationships in matrix structure

Potential oversight in a direct reporting relationship of Sr. Project Manager level employee(s), as well as indirect management responsibilities within matrixed structure

Oversight includes the management of these resources in the effective execution and evaluation of the program(s), as well as in their own professional development. S/he will also have the ability and expectation to manage within a matrixed organization additional staff, who may work directly on his/her initiatives, but have a separate direct HR reporting relationship. Direct/Indirect management responsibilities include completing or contributing to the annual performance review, creating plans for developing competencies, and providing coaching and mentorship. The Program Director also leads the establishment and management of program/project budgets; champions the funding during the budget season; and monitors on a monthly basis actual spend, with support from the Executive Director of Population Health Management and Care Redesign. The Program Director works as a key administrative lead for multiple programs & projects, including but not limited to Faculty Wellness, Diversity and Inclusion, and Professional and Academic Advancement. In this role he/she collaborates and coordinates efforts with staff across/within BWH, BWPO, MGH/MGPO, and the Partners Healthcare System. He/she also ensures that information flows smoothly between the project teams, the Medical Directors, and BWPO, Hospital, and Partners Physician and Administrative leadership. In addition, he/she works within a matrixed organization to hold clinical and administrative teams accountable to the implementation of programs, and achievement of program goals, including assessment and adaptation of program design, measurement of performance, and influencing organizational leadership and strategy. The Program Director participates in broader Medical Management work, including but not limited to mentoring peers and more junior team members; representing the Medical Management team to external entities; and collaborating in the development of strategic frameworks and tools. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Designs, implements, and manages all aspects of large, complex, multi-disciplinary programs, including piloting projects, new technologies, etc., as needed * Manages all program budgets, including funding from multiple sources; negotiates and prepares contracts with external consultants, vendors, and venues in relationship to all managed programs. Prepares budget and financial analyses for all program budgets, development proposals and reports, and federally funded grants and contracts. * Evaluates the utilization and capacity planning of existing staff to inform strategic and financial decisions regarding the need for new roles and resources * Manages a team of resources, both directly and indirectly, to ensure the successful execution of key tasks and strategies, as well as supports individual professional development * Responsible for the recruiting, hiring, and training of new team members, in conjunction with Brigham and BWPO Human Resources and the hiring manager * Partners on a daily basis with clinical and administrative leadership across the team and other internal and external partners to ensure a collaborative approach * Ensures communication and smooth information flow between involved parties, including but not limited to team members, physicians, BWPO and MGPO administration, hospital leadership, and PCPO or PHS staff * Communicates in a strategic manner both directly and indirectly to stakeholders * Directs his/her team in regards to marketing and branding efforts both internal and external * Collaborates across the Partners network to collaborate and when possible align like efforts * Evaluates key data and analytics related to process, outcome, and survey metrics to evaluate the success of the programs h/she oversees, and informs the revision/evolution of the program * Manages specialized summer research training programs; the Four Directions Summer Research Program, the Summer Training in Academic Research and Scholarship (STARS) Program. Oversees national outreach, promotion and recruitment and oversees competitive admissions process. Oversees the organization of all educational and social programmatic activities and the scheduling of clinical shadowing and mentored experiences for summer students. Manages all program assessments, operational plans and supports ongoing development efforts. Oversees extensive fiscal and programmatic reporting for two summer research training programs public and foundation grants and gifts. * Collaborates with faculty and administrative leaders in delivery of specialized leadership courses; e.g. the Brigham Leadership Program and the Women's Leadership Program as well as executing professional development programming. * Oversees annual data collection and personalized outreach to residency applicants in support of BWH/Partners training program recruitment and diversity efforts. QUALIFICATIONS: * Master's Degree in public health, healthcare management or related field required * Academic medical center or large healthcare system experience * Minimum of 7-10 years' experience in healthcare field, physician engagement and/or related Project Management skills * Demonstrated experience in project management leadership * Previous leadership experience preferred * Experience in promoting healthcare provider behavior change is desirable * Demonstrated expertise in managing working relationships in matrix structure * Established scholarly record with focus on quality measurement and evaluation science * Experience in statistical analysis as well as established record in data analysis and presentation.
