JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

This is an Instrument/Electrical (I/E) technician position in which the incumbent will perform basic and mid-level I/E craft tasks while receiving formal training and mentoring within the I/E organization. The incumbent may coach and/or mentor employees in the entry-level or trainee level of the I/E craft. The incumbent will be familiar with the safety requirements of the I/E crafts to be able to aid or lead in the installation, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, adjusting of electrical equipment, instrumentation, and analytical equipment within an industrial/manufacturing plant environment.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Understand and apply all the Industrial Safety requirements for the Instrument and Electrical crafts in the assigned plants or shops. Safe work practices and requirements including ISO, Responsible Care (RC) and any other plant specific requirements consistent with job tasks

  • Use all common tools of the Instrument/Electrical crafts, be able to use hand tools, power tools and electrical/electronic test equipment.

  • Solid understanding and knowledge of gaskets, packing, bolts, anchors, hoses, metallurgy, and field mounting techniques associated with electrical and instrumentation equipment.

  • Solid knowledge of electrical lighting, instrumentation, and electrical maintenance/installation principles both hands-on and theoretical knowledge

  • I/E technician will be able to work on Instrumentation Calibration and configuration, Pneumatic Control Valves Actuators and Positioners, Performing Loop Checks, Troubleshooting and Commissioning a Loop, Process Control Loops and Tuning.

  • The incumbent can perform basic to mid-level installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment, instrumentation, and analytical equipment.

  • Apply and mentor others on the principles of Electrical Theory, Alternating Current, E/I Test Equipment, Flow Pressure Level and Temperature, Process Math, Hand Bending Tubing, Basics of Instrument Drawings and Documents and Conductors, Cables, Conductor Terminations and Splices.

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of equipment including, but is not limited to, Pumps and Drives, Valves, Material Handling and Hand Rigging

  • Demonstrate I/E ability and experience to read, interpret, and implement electrical codes, manuals, procedures, schematic diagrams, P&ID's, blueprints, and other specifications.

  • The employee will aid senior technicians or engineers in Programmable Logic Controllers, Distributed Control Systems, Stand-by and Emergency Systems.

  • Work on the installation of power supply and signal wiring/cables, cable tray and conduit for newly installed machines, electrical equipment, instrumentation, distributive control systems, signal interface cabinets and telephone systems.

  • Replace faulty electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components of machines, electrical equipment, and instrumentation. (Performed under direction of senior technicians)

  • Know how to check-out parts and material from storeroom for routine installation, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment and instrumentation.

  • Perform routine/non-routine housekeeping jobs to keep work area clean and safe.

  • Capable of coordinating training in electrical and instrumentation troubleshooting, repair, and installation skills.

  • Continue to acquire basic knowledge of processes involved in the production units.

  • Successful completion of the Evonik Corporation progression system for the Instrument/Electrical courses as required components for promotion to Instrument/Electrical Technician. The program is established in SuccessFactors.

  • Participate in on/off site vendor or technical training.

  • Learn basics of maintenance best practice principles regarding planning and performing maintenance accordingly.

  • Must be capable of learning SAP R11 Computer Maintenance Management System. The system will be used for Work Orders, Procurement of Materials, Work Hour Input, Closing Statements

  • Have proven knowledge about the tracking maintenance costs and other team KPI's, etc.

  • Properly document all repair activities and actively seek continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Clearly communicate with the Maintenance Department, Contractors and Area Engineers and Production Units as needed. Ability to interact in a productive manner in a team environment

  • Promote an environment/culture for safe and effective work.

  • Willingness to learn, grow skills and expertise

  • Perform skilled instrument trade functions including SIS testing and calibration. Execute routine preventative maintenance (PM) and predictive maintenance (CBM) tasks. Troubleshoot equipment and correct any failed components.

  • Document work in SAP CMMS

  • Attend Training - safety, technical & development.

  • Train & mentor others on precision maintenance principles regarding troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, installation, and documentation.

Essential Functions Physical Demands:

  • Heavy work: Exerting up to 60 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical mobility and agility are required, for example climbing ladders and stairs, working off scaffolding, prolonged stooping, stretching, bending, and confined space entry.

  • May require working in a rotating shift environment including weekends, holidays and call-in schedule.

  • Sensory faculties are needed to safely perform the job duties that allow a person to react to potential immediate hazardous conditions and to take appropriate actions.

  • Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as respiratory protection, safety harness, and full protection. In addition to common protective or safety equipment such as, safety shoes, eye protection, hand protection, heating protection, hard hates, etc.

Environmental Work Conditions:

  • The incumbent is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

  • Activities occur inside and outside. The incumbent is subject to outside environmental conditions: No effective protection from weather. The incumbent is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures below 32 degrees F for periods of more than one hour. The incumbent is subject to extreme heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees F for periods of more than one hour.

  • The incumbent is subject to noise: There is enough to cause them to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level.

  • The incumbent is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.

  • The incumbent is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

  • The incumbent is subject to atmospheric conditions that can require respiratory protection: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, or poor ventilation. The incumbent must wear a respirator (potentially breathing air or filter mask, air line or self-contained), encapsulated suit.

  • The incumbent is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Diploma/Nitec in Electrical/Electronic Associate degree - min 5 years' experience in maintenance journeyman in relevant industry.

  • A demonstrated proficiency level experience and skill for the I/E craft is required, this can be achieved by obtaining acceptable or satisfactory scores on courses or tests imparted by NCCER, Ramsey, trade schools or other nationally recognized I/E craft training organization combined with observed field experience or bench testing.

  • Sound knowledge in E&I and Process Controls.

  • Motivated and able to work under pressure.

  • Team oriented and communicative.

  • Familiar with various Temperature, Pressure, and flow instrumentation.

  • Program and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives.

  • Distributive Control Systems knowledge of Delta V and RS3 a plus.

  • Device net and Foundation Fieldbus are also a plus.

  • Computer, including standard software and SAP.

  • Able to use the basic E&I test equipment / Driver Explorer, RsLinx, AMS and standard software. Install, rebuild, and pressure test control and stop valves.

  • Handling highly hazardous materials.

  • Physical mobility and agility are required, for example climbing ladders and stairs, working off scaffolding, prolonged stooping, stretching, bending, and confined space entry.

  • May require working in a rotating shift environment including weekends and holidays.

  • Ability to understand and operate a personal computer

and associated software systems.

  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.

  • Participate in overtime activities such as outage activities, vacation coverage, illness coverage, needed to complete critical tasks, and on call for mechanical issues during off hours.
