Business Reporting Internship - Summer 2019

Star Tribune Media Company Minneapolis , MN 55415

Posted 1 week ago

Star Tribune offers 10-week summer reporting internships. We recruit nationally for this program and select talented, driven college and graduate students who can cover breaking news, as well as write enterprise stories. We expect our interns to come to us with skill and leave with polish and invaluable experience from a major-market newsroom. We will place reporters in metro, business, features and sports; please note your preference.

Our summer interns are paid the same as first-year professionals, $735 a week. We provide:

  • a real-world experience in a major daily newsroom
  • a challenging and affirming environment that includes mentors and supervisors
  • weekly brown-bag lunch discussions on topics such as investigative reporting, narrative writing and multimedia storytelling.

We expect our reporting interns:

  • to develop their own story ideas and to run hard at the assignments we give them
  • to work closely with editors, photographers and other reporters to provide substantive news stories
  • to have a valid driver's license if working as a reporter or photographer
  • to be highly proficient writers
  • to conduct themselves in a professional manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Excellent communication and writing skills, flexibility and the ability to handle deadline pressure are all crucial in this job. We also value candidates who are proficient with Web research tools, social media tools and InCopy, or similar word-processing software. Skills working with data, including analysis and building digital visualizations, are a plus.

Most successful applicants have completed their junior or senior year in college and interned with at least one professional daily news organization. Top candidates have experience demonstrating that they're ready to make the most of this opportunity. The term will be early June to early August.

Your application, which must be uploaded by Nov. 1, should include:

  • Five to 10 of your best published clips demonstrating your ability to report and write clear, compelling stories on deadline.

  • A cover letter explaining why you want to be a journalist, what skills you'd bring to the position and the department (metro, sports, features or business) in which you'd like to intern.

  • A resume detailing your journalism experience, and three references, including their titles, phone numbers and email addresses

  • Two letters of recommendation. At least one of those letters should come from an editor who's seen you work in a professional environment on deadline. Please do not submit letters of reference from fellow student journalists.

  • Your references can attach letters of recommendation to your application or email them to newsrecruiter@startribune.com with your name in the subject line.
