BUSINESS PLANNING CONSULTANT, Outpatient Service Focus

Corporate Business Planning and Market Development Department and Partners Ambulatory Center Group

Reporting to a Manager or Director of Business Planning, the Consultant provides key analyses and contributes to the development of business and strategic plans for the System and for Partners Ambulatory Center leadership. These are high profile projects championed by senior leadership including Partners Healthcare CEO, hospital and institution CEOs, executive and senior level administrators, and physician chiefs.

The Business Planning Consultant is involved in multiple projects that answer broad questions about the strategic direction of the Partners system. These might include external market research, volume and margin analysis, financial modeling to size growth opportunities and assess feasibility of new services, programs, or sites of care in both fee-for-service and/or contractual risk environments. This position focuses on community-based outpatient services, which will entail monitoring outpatient market trends, analyzing volume and margin performance of outpatient services (including professional services) and working closely with Partners Ambulatory Care team and leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct market research and financial analysis to support business plan development (with a focus on outpatient services)

  • Collaborate closely with the team to produce and present results of analyses, highlighting findings that would potentially impact strategic planning efforts

  • Develop financial models to assess feasibility, return on investment, and/or TME savings impact from growth opportunities

  • Produce executive level presentations of analytic results including key observations based on interpretation of volume and financial data

  • Provide support in developing strategic recommendations to aid decision-making by senior management. May include scenario modeling, assessment of market opportunity, risk, and potential financial return

  • Build relationships with colleagues across Business Planning and Partners Ambulatory departments and Partners

  • Keep abreast of healthcare trends, as context for analyses and planning

  • Analyze current and historical volume and margin trends for hospitals and services.

  • Assist department to maintain data integrity across multiple data sources/databases

  • Become expert in data sources, querying data, and displaying analysis in a visually pleasing and digestible format

  • Bachelor's degree required. MBA or MPH preferred.

  • Three years plus financial analysis, preferably in a healthcare environment

  • Familiarity with Physician Organization (Provider Based) financials a plus

  • Knowledge of healthcare operations and data structures and the use of information system applications in the practicing healthcare environment (emphasis on provider-based data sets)

  • Intellectually curious with an aptitude to learn quickly

  • Individual with superior analytic skills who places great value on data integrity and analytic accuracy

  • Ability to construct a narrative and 'so what' key takeaways by being able to self-edit and focus on the appropriate level of detail to drive actionable deliverables

  • Ability to independently conduct detailed analysis and distill relevant findings for presentation to high-level audience

  • Understanding the big picture, even when the work gets granular, requiring strong organizational skills

  • An ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize them, and carry them out independently. This role does require you to "roll up your sleeves" and play an active role to make change happen

  • Focus on professional development by embracing training opportunities, accepting and proactively asking for constructive feedback

  • Strong time management skills and ability to balance multiple projects at one time

  • Comfort with ambiguity and have good problem-solving skills

  • Comfortable with developing financial models using sound and rationale assumptions.

  • Excel in a team-based, highly collaborative environment with strong emphasis on relationships, teamwork, and trust

  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation abilities

  • Comfortable interfacing with senior level leadership

  • Aptitude for strong project management and meeting facilitation skills

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to drive projects to completion

  • Ability to navigate a large and complex organization

  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills

  • Proficient in SQL, Tableau, and Thinkcell
