Under the guidance of the Director of Hospital Revenue Cycle, and within established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, is responsible for the department's operational excellence. Manages the overall operation and function of the Patient Accounts department to ensure a healthy accounts receivable and predictable cash flow for the hospital. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department team to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism and leadership at all times.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience in a healthcare setting.

  • Analytical skills necessary to evaluate and explain KPI and budget variances; examine patient accounts; detect and resolve problems relating to accounts receivable.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access), with particular strength in using Excel (pivot tables, etc) to analyze data.

  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

  • Ability to establish priorities effectively.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledge of healthcare collection and billing practices and computer systems.

  • General understanding CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding.

  • Experience with Cerner system a plus.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Organizes and directs an integrated patient accounting system while consistently monitoring accounts receivable to ensure departmental KPI goals are met.

  • Develops, prepares, and monitors the fiscal year budget for the department, including processing vendor invoices and preparing monthly budget variance reports for leadership.

  • Compiles reports for leadership when requested and analyzes data to identify trends and areas of opportunity to improve department efficiency and performance.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of data processing software applications and continually monitors and evaluates reporting and control systems. Maintains accounts receivable records and reconciles to general ledger controls to ensure that the hospital's cash position is not impaired. Develops and revises reporting formats to secure data for monitoring and evaluating departmental activity and valuation of receivables.

  • Participates in revenue cycle and cross-departmental meetings to ensure a smooth operating clinically driven revenue cycle. Is an active member on various committees as requested.

  • Maintains appropriate internal control safeguards over A/R records and collection of cash and maintains compliance standards for providing accurate information on all claims.

  • Keeps abreast of reimbursement procedures of third-party agencies and private insurance payors as well as federal and state regulations impacting hospital billing and reimbursement activities.

  • Drafts/edits/updates department specific procedures and policies as appropriate.

  • Works with leadership, clinical and other hospital departments to improve processes, increase accuracy, create efficiencies, resolve related issues, and achieve the overall goals of the department.

  • Supervises assigned personnel within the department, including evaluation of two Supervisors performance and provides guidance, counsel and discipline as needed. Performs employee performance appraisals on time and in a fair and consistent manner.

  • Performs related managerial and administrative duties as assigned.

Education/Training:

  • High School Diploma required

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or equivalent experience required

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Ability to sit/stand as needed.

Ability to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
