The librarian for business information provides business reference, consultation and instruction services for the Owen and Vanderbilt communities of faculty, staff, students, alumni, as well as members of the local business community.

The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries at Vanderbilt University comprises nine libraries, as well as service departments in collection services, digital scholarship & scholarly communications, information technology and digital services, and teaching & learning. We seek to create a welcoming environment and serve as a partner in research and scholarship. The libraries are dynamic places for faculty, staff, students, and alumni to reflect and discover. We also strive to be a workplace in which staff at every level continuously grow in knowledge and skills, staying abreast of advances and trends in librarianship to power relevant, vibrant research libraries.

The Walker Management Library is embedded in the Owen Graduate School of Management and is focused delivering world-class library services on a personal scale.

Duties and Responsibilities

Information Services

  • Provide expert level business information consultation to the students, faculty and staff of Vanderbilt University.

  • Apply in-depth knowledge of business research with real-world business applications in one-on-one consultations, workshops, and classroom teaching.

  • Develop and deliver innovative consultation services drawing on established and emerging computational research methods.

  • Primary library liaison for business related-sub disciplines, such as Entrepreneurship, Healthcare, Marketing

  • Offer sub-discipline specific services and build relationships with students, faculty, post-docs and staff in these programs.

  • Provide instructional services, such as orientations, one-shot instruction sessions for classes, and course assignments and workshops on tools and topics.

  • Develop learning goals, design classes, and research exercises for the classroom.

  • Be prepared to deliver a credit bearing Advanced Business Research course.

  • Develop curriculum, create and evaluate assignments and manage the classroom.

  • Utilize Vanderbilt CMS, follow teaching best practices, and university policy.

  • Participate in Owen Accelerator projects, lead team research and evaluate student deliverables.

  • Manage online research guides, create topical and course guides to support research, instruction and assignments.

  • Provide expert knowledge of software delivery (LibGuide/Springshare) for online research guides.

  • Participate in evaluating library databases and resources, specifically print reference collection, career books and gifts.

  • Participate in the life of the library and the university, liaise with student organizations, and staff groups, including the Wond'ry, Development & Alumni Relations Center for Student Professional Development and Owen's Career Management Center.

Committee and Professional Development Activities

  • Serve the university and the profession by participation in Owen, library and university committees and initiatives.

  • Professionally active in local and national organizations, through leadership, scholarship and presentation.



Frequent verbal and written contact with various departments, staff, and faculty members to exchange information.

Daily communication with students, faculty and library users to provide Library information and consultation.


Occasional contact with vendors and library professionals outside of Vanderbilt University.

Student/Faculty: Frequent contact with students, faculty and library users to provide Library information and assistance.

  • M.L.I.S., or equivalent, necessary

  • Three to five years professional business library experience

  • Knowledge of business subjects and relevant information sources

  • Evidence of strong analytical and research skills

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills; oral and written; ability communicate about complex concepts

  • Demonstrated teaching and presentation expertise

  • Ability to adapt to and adopt new technologies with ease

  • Demonstrated reference, instruction, and collection development experience

  • Evidence of potential professional contributions and ongoing professional development

  • Strong service ethic

  • Collaborative skills

  • Capacity to shift priorities in a rapidly changing environment
